I’m currently looking for a secondhand (1-5 years old) petrol-engined midsize estate and a couple of obvious candidates are the Audi A4 Avant 2.0T and the Skoda Octavia VRS.

However, while these tick most of the boxes for me, they both have the VAG 2.0 TFSI/TSI engine which seems to have gained something of a reputation for major oil consumption issues.

Is anyone able to tell me definitively:

a) whether the problem affects all installations of this engine (I have seen it suggested that it's present only with the inline versions - i.e. Audi A4)
b) whether VAG have now sorted the problem and, if so, which model years or engine versions were affected and are therefore best avoided.

Any advice or guidance would be appreciated

Thanks
Mike

I believe it concerns engines in the A4, A5 and Q5 between 2008 and 2012 but some have been sorted and Audi have quietly been fixing affected cars for free. I've got a 2012 2.0 TFSi and it needs about 500ml of oil every 2000 miles so not excessive.

Hi RammyMP - thanks for the link. I hadn't come across that site before and there's certainly some useful info on these issues relating to the Audi A5 (and presumably the same applies to the A4).

Does anyone have any details about whether the version of this engine in the Skoda Octavia VRS is also impacted by this issue and, if so, which model years? I'll try posting on the Briskoda forum as well.

Thanks
Mike

Briskoda is the place to look.... Take extra note of the stick at the top of the mk2 forum ....

The in-line and transverse EA888s seem to suffer a different issue in that the in-line (Audi) engine likes a drink and the transverse likes a new timing chain.

The chain issue I would say is not as common as the oil one; particularly on the Audi side as a relatively small number of cars use these engines.

Audi do indeed now seem to be opening the corporate wallet when the oil issue arises; I've not heard of a case being turned down.

Hi Dr G - thanks for the detailed reply.

Having looked round for alternatives, I'm struggling to find something which meets my criteria as well for a mid-sized petrol-engined estate so keep coming back to either the A4 2.0T or the Octavia VRS. I assume, maybe wrongly, that VAG have done upgrades/modifications to try and eliminate the timing chain/oil consumption issues so was just wondering whether there are any cut-offs in terms of build dates, model years, etc which differentiate those cars with a higher risk of failure. In particular, I'd be interested to know whether the latest generation of the Octavia VRS (2013 onwards?) is still prone to the timing chain issue.

Any further help or advice would be appreciated

Regards
Mike

I can speak for the VRS , in a word no the 2013 - on MK3 VRS TSI hasnt suffered with timing chain issues , i believe the tensioners have been revised at least 3 times and these latest ones seem to be pretty good. It wouldnt stop me buying an earlier car though but id budget to replace the tensioner with a revised version if it hadnt already been done

We're in a similar place I was looking at a Golf GTI Mk5, B7 Audi A4 2.0T or Skoda Octavia vRS (all petrol).

These all run the 197bhp engine used in the Golf GTI Mk5.

You need to pick:

B7 Audi A4 2.0T FSI Avant (2005-2008), not the later B8 model (2008 onwards).
Some of the run out limited edition models got increased to 217bhp. - link to wiki

Petrol Mk2 Skoda Octavia vRS (2005-2008, but 2008 if the facelift version) - link to wiki here

why not b8? - its the same engine (and they made the B8 on 2008 - I have one!)

Sorry, yes B8 started in 2008, not 2009 (I've edited).

The excessive oil issues are related to the 2.0T in the B8 A4 Avant, not the B7. You may be fortunate not to have an issue but many others have the issue.

B7 uses EA113, belt driven 2.0 TFSI.

B8 uses EA888, chain driven 2.0 TFSI.

Despite spec-sheet similarities the B8 engine is very different.

Well today I learnt something new.

VAG don't seem to be contesting high oil consumption engine rebuilds - so perhaps buy a newer one and have the modified pistons etc installed by VAG FOC!

Hmmm, buy a car, find it consumes large amounts of oil and then hope Audi will pay for rebuild, plus give you a loan car whilst it's been repaired.

Sounds like a big risk, lots of hassle and these issues could well lead to B8 Audi A4 Avant prices taking a big drop.

I think it might affect the saloons if the avants are affected.

How many miles on the TFSI? Coked up intake valves on the TFSI is as inevitable as taxes and death. Unavoidable, unless you're dumping the PCV gases to atmosphere.

If you're looking at a GTI, get the Edition 30 (BYD engine) as it doesn't scoff anywhere near as much oil as the GTI. And it's faster, looks nicer and doesn't depreciate as much.

2.0 TFSI 0-80,000 miles - no issues with coking

3.2 FSI 45,000 miles in and no issues with coking.

A redline a day keps the coking at bay it seems
