Specs vary massively - in SWB form they offer similar performance to an S8, albeit delivered in a quite different way. LWB (which is much more common) has longer gearing to suit its cruising/chauffeur role and is not as quick.
You'll find many have lived fairly hard lives over substantial mileages and will be lacking desirable options like B&O, ACC etc as well as needing some remedial work to trim or bodywork. Mechanically they're pretty good so long as one of the infamous engine out jobs doesn't rear up, but S8s are prone to the odd one of those too.
There's an incredibly high spec LWB W12 been for sale on the A8parts forum since July which I believe is still available - has all the active safety toys, plus extended leather packs 1,2,3+4! B&O, rear entertainment, fridge etc. Deep blue with a chocolate brown interior. Believe it runs on LPG too.
Personally an S8 floats my boat more, but I don't need a LWB. There's a stunning ultra low miles one up in Scotland with B&O, but priced steep. ACC would be nice to have, but B&O would be the only option I wouldn't miss out on so long as the interior colour wasn't too vile (there's some iffy combos out there!)

Pretty much what Adrian E said. If you get one, get a warranty, and don't settle for one that doesn't have all the toys. This is the car on A8Parts he was referring to:

Cheers for the advice guys.
I've seen the sales post for that car on the other forum but can't help thinking he's pricing it optimistically. The interior is literally a marmite colour. I've seen a facelift 2008 one on Autotrader with 85,000 miles on for £13600 before haggling. He forum one might be better spec but it's older and also, once you're past three years or so old, surely additional spec makes the car more saleable rather than valuable.

It is optimistically priced, but depends whether the LPG install is of interest. A lot of the kit on that example has been retrofitted to get as close to ultimate spec as possible - none of them left the factory anywhere close to it!I've seen the sales post for that car on the other forum but can't help thinking he's pricing it optimistically. I rather like it, but I wouldn't pay a premium for it
