WHAT WOULD YOU KILL FOR?
To catch a train?
To get to work five minutes earlier?
Because you want to finish the shopping before you pick the children up?
Of course you wouldn't.
And yet...
DRIVING TOO FAST CAUSES 77,000 INJURIES AND KILLS AROUND 1,000 PEOPLE EVERY YEAR
SO WHY DO WE DO IT?
"I drive fast because I'm in a hurry"
The difference between driving 50 miles at 60mph and at 70mph is a saving of seven minutes. On an average journey you will probably save less than a couple of minutes by driving like a maniac. Is it worth it?
"I have fast reflexes so I can drive faster"
Accidents are avoided by anticipation, not reaction. The reaction of a fighter pilot is only 0.4 seconds faster than that of the average driver.
"It's slow drivers who cause accidents, getting in the way"
The one causing the accident is you, trying to overtake at any price. I have to keep up with the traffic. Driving too close causes at least 10% of accidents. Give yourself room to react.
"I've been driving fast for years and never had an accident"
You've been lucky. Nearly 80,000 casualties every year thought it couldn't happen to them.
"I only speed when there's no other traffic around."
In nearly 20% of accidents where drivers and passengers are killed or seriously injured, no other vehicle is involved.
"There's no point in keeping to the 30 limit. If someone steps out in front of you there's nothing you can do"
The slower you are going when you hit the brakes, the better the chance a pedestrian will have. Nine out of ten people - even children - survive a 20mph collision, but at 40mph nine out of ten are killed.
SO WHAT IS A SAFE SPEED?
Speed limits in the table below are the MAXIMUM safe driving speeds for the type of road and if we all kept to them many lives would be saved.
But driving at safe speed means more than just obeying speed limits. That may still be too fast in some road conditions, especially wet, slippery surfaces and poor visibility.
In traffic, leave a gap of at least two seconds between you and the car in front. Double the space if the road is wet or icy, or in mist and fog.
On country roads, take the bends slowly. Your car may corner well, but you don't know what's round the corner.
Slow down in residential areas.

You're really on a roll today, SC.
I thought most thinking people agreed that the 1/3 lie is exactly that, a lie. How fast exactly is 'too fast'? Aah, here we go

That explains why my car bursts into flames and I die in the ensuing inferno every time my speedo creeps up over 30mph in a 30 then.
But then we have streetcop's think PR continued said:

Pity the important bit's at the bottom. Most people would lose interest after reading all the rubbish at the top.

Oh, I did, hence streetcop's think PR continued in my post above. Are you having a slow day? You seem to be posting a lot of this 'think' and 'speed kills' drivel today.
As for me, I just washed my bike and now I'm off out to get it dirty again. Don't worry, I won't speed (much) and certainly not past any cameras

Actually rushing and being in a hurry is dangerous - spot on there.
Conversely cruising around with the odd high-speed blat for a bit of fun is generally ome of the safer things in life.
A traffic policeman like yourself could tell the difference between an impatient driver and a relaxed
fun driver and act appropriately.
Cameras can't.

I agree that Cameras don't have the ability to 'weigh things up'...however..it's also very difficult to assess a drivers ability in a very short amount of time..
Oh dear thats just so last season.
What would you kill for
Last year more than 1000 people died needlessly because some really really stupid people put speed humps in the road and the emergency services were delayed.
For years road deaths have been in decline but now speed cameras are rapidly ramping them back up again with as many as 600 deaths attributable to cameras.
Some public transport diesels produce two of the most deadly toxins known and they are allowed to pump these carcinogens into the atmosphere unhindered by legislation. Cancer claims thousands of lives every year and many will be attributable in whole or part to public transport.
Almost half of the people killed on the roads are unsupervised children and drunken jaywalkers. The government has been aware of this for years, yet has absolutely no plans or even ideas of how to address it, even though our European cousins have.
Mens health and ultimate life expactancy has improved dramatically since we stopped slaughtering large numbers in wars. The biggest killers today are heart disease and stress. The government in pandering to whimsical global warming fantasists has been strategically creating additional congestion in every town and city throughout the UK in the hope of proving some of the totally unproven paradigms set out by professor David Begg, such as "If you build new roads they just fill up so there is no point" As a result road narrowing, silly road hump madness and additional traffic lights (Often installed to give Local authority officers more staff and therefore a larger salary) together with completely unnecessary but strategically placed road works, have increased congestion dramatically over the last 10 years even though there has not been a significant increase in the number of cars on the road. This is clearly a strategy designed to save on pension payouts by killing off male drivers who do the bulk of the commuting.
Oh yes and I almost forgot occasionally the odd driver may kill themselves or others because they drive too fast. This accounts for about 70 deaths per year and as such is completely insignificant and may as well be ignored until the other problems have been addressed.

Oh come on, the government is doing it's level best to increase the number slaughtered in wars, we can't bash them for everything - credit where credit's due!!

You forgot to add bus lanes to that list, this latest trend in insanity has turned Cambridge into a nightmare, queues now stretch onto the M11, something that never happened before their introduction

"I drive fast because I'm in a hurry"
The majority are driving in flow of traffic at 85th percentile speed. Most are copped at 5 mph above speed limit on non-residential roads as well. Certainly nowhere near the ever popular school.

What kind of road we talking about? Most m'ways in EU are at 81.25 mph and above in case of some Italian autostrade (und Mama Mia - they "havva rejuista le incidente molto moltissimo!"
)) und also in Germany... Pratspin said:

Ist a nonsense! The average driver take between 0.5 (about 4 car length or so at 70 mph?) und 0.8 seconds to react to danger. On track test - I wwas recorded 8/10 occasions at 0.3 second reaction - but that was charged mit adremalin.
Und we play a party game - a bit like the scene mit Yul Brynner in the Magnificent Seven when he tests the youngster's ability to draw gun fast. We play drop the pencil between finger und thumb - und this ist indication of fast reaction time und co-rdinations You try this when slightly tipsy or mit a cold or medicine ... und you get idea as to how it affects you

Ist COAST und PARC. Has nothing to do mit speed. Und I have been behind a driver earlier this afternoon ... driving at 20 mph in 40 mph zone. I kept good distance at 17 mph to get a good acceleration when we reached the straight. When I overtook - at safe point in road - she started flashing her lights und sounding horn at me - und the trail of peoples who played follwo the leader after me.
She was middle aged
I did think charitably that she thought tSteviebabes was lurkin' - but was still legally just under the limit at 37 mph per b2. Pratspin said:

Und too many happen at or below speed limit - usually catalysed by drunk pedestrian or a dark clad numpty without lights in the dark...
Und a lot happen when one ist stationary at lights or roundabouts ....

Ist COAST which ist key. These are skills which need developing. Also - we need to educate people that the roads are not playgrounds und that they should use the Green Cross Code at all times. Or do they not walk that few yards to the crossing "because they are in a hurry"

So reducing speed limit on a dual carriageway mit no schools. parks, houses , factoreis, shops... from 50 mph to 30 mph? Und enforcing mit scam?
Moon ist made of cream cheese
Lives would be saved if peds und cyclists also adhered to rules of the road....

Lets see:
-My fiancee's safety
-My family's safety
-Probably that of many of my friends, too.
-An obscene amount of money
-An obscene amount of power
-An end to social ills, like terrorism, poverty, violent crime, George W Bush...
-And right now, a good Jalfrezi!

Rubbish. Define "too fast". Define the behavious that cause the crashes. How many of those crashes involve normal responsible motorists exceeding a speed limit?
And the 77,000 figure is way way wrong, by any definition.
