Due to excess play in my rack I will be changing the rack over winter.
Whilst you can get refurbished racks on exchange ideally I would like mine repaired but as far as I can find out from phoning round that the actual rack bar is no longer available.
I have found a place that manufactures steering parts and was thinking if they can reverse engineer the bar then happy days.
Alternatively as I do like a project if you couldn't tell? Fitting an alternative rack ie Impreza rack. Cost wise brand new Impreza rack £250 obviously some fabrication but I'd do that at work
Refurbished exchange rack as mine would be unrepairable £500 plus £500 surcharge
It's a shame as my rack doesn't leak it's just worn.

I had mine refurbished last year and it was nightmare and took three attempts and 4 months to actually get a working rack (from a well respected supplier). I did have a look around at alternatives but the space in the Cerb is very tight with a fairly large offset in the shaft axis and the pinion has to be in just the right place. I did wonder about fitting a manual rack with a after market power assist (which tends to be at the steering wheel end) but this has its own set of problems and would be both difficult and expensive.
I think £50 on a used Impreza rack would be worth it to see if it's possible to do the swap. My cars only covered 30k with the rack showing first signs about 27 so to do the same mileage again and have to replace the rack again after that would be expensive and annoying. So £50 and some time mocking it up seems worth while.
If I have to bite the bullet and do an exchange then so be it.

But plan B would be the Tuscan rack
Looking at the Tuscan rack the only difference I can see is that the rack bar doesn't have the seal?
Problem is also that you can only get refurbished ones. And many stories of them not lasting.
I'm afraid I can't answer your question, I can find out easily though. I'll post again when I have the info. It's a quicker rack, quite noticeable.Looking at the Tuscan rack the only difference I can see is that the rack bar doesn't have the seal?

Because I am about to do a hunt for a rack, I will let you know what I find. I recall that last time, I ended up with two original Tuscan racks, then sold the one I didn't need.
What's the possibility of mine having a Tuscan rack any way 2004 car with the short rack rods.?
Guess once I get round to removing it I'll find out.
The Impreza idea comes from a thread on a griff that's had it done.
Tvr parts should be getting things like these manufactured instead of the refurbished ones with the possibility of them not lasting.

I was once told by Str8 6 it was advised for me to upgrade to the Tuscan rack as its a better material? if mine ever does go I'd be more inclined to go that way (keep it TVR)...Guess once I get round to removing it I'll find out.
