Can anyone tell me the right size of rivnuts I need to replace the F1 panel and scuttle?

Hi,

these panels are fitted with bolts in my car.
I seem to remember somebody damaged his windscreen with rivets.
Not sure if this is a forum-legend, maybe you want to double-check this anyway.

best regards

Hi Henning. They're bolted on my car also. The rivnut is just the type of compression fitted captive nut which goes in to the body tub for the bolts to screw in to smile

All the rivnuts for my F1 panel have pulled out though and now one of the scuttle ones has pulled too. Between those and my old exhaust rattling the car sounds like it is falling to pieces so I've decided to make time to fix it smile

just poking my nose in here, no idea what an F1 panel is but would these little chaps be any good?
They put a lot less strain on the fibreglass compared to a rivnut or similar scratchchin

Jamie, if they have pulled through the fibreglass you will have to go up a size or repair the holes before inserting new rivnuts. Or is that me stating the obvious.?

I've just had a quick look at me nuts..........

My don't protrude top and bottom of the fibre glass so I'm guessing at them being circa 15mm long with an outside diameter of 9mm.

As has been mentioned you'll probably need to remove the knackered nut, fill the remaining hole with resin, leave it to fully cure and then re-drill to suit new nut.

Also, one of the first jobs I did on my car was to replace the panel securing bolts with M6x25mm stainless (303 grade) thumbscrews from WDS components. They're not exactly cheap at £2.50 each but they look pretty smart and it means I can have the panels off / on very quickly without the need for any tools.

What you could do is:

Cut out a rectangular hole where the old one was
Get a rectangular threaded plate (google images for threaded plate for some examples)
Pub some fibreglass resin on it to act as glue
Put a bolt into the plate, insert plate into hole and turn it 90 degrees such that the plate is under the existing grp.
Use the bolt to hold the plate in position until the resin goes off
Fill the holes either side with more resin

Thanks guys. Some good suggestions here. The F1 panel has access to the back side of the body tub flange but the scuttle doesn't (unless someone can correct me) so I'll still need rivnuts there. I would prefer not to upsize so shall fill the existing holes with resin and redrill as suggested.

As above it's not a big job, it's just something that's not very appealling to do!

Link to the thumbscrews...? (Being lazy and there is millions of them)

Could be rather handy! Annoying have to get an allen head everytime you want to remove the scuttle.

I have used bighead fasteners to replace both studs and nuts in some places, you can araldite them to either the front or rear face depending on what access you have
