Whilst driving suddenly heard a strange noise like a slipping fan belt , I slowed down checked all the readings , battery water temp etc the noise stopped but I was left with no instrument lamps on the dash , radio Ok , fan OK everything else Ok .

Any ideas folks ?

I don't know where the noise fits in? But you do know that there is a switch to dim/turn off the dash lamps.

From memory, under the steering column on the S1 and S2 and one of the 3 centre switches on the S3 onwards.

Yes indeed , I will check it out but did not touch anything whist trying to identify the noise .

That's interesting I did know that there is a switch to dim/turn off the dash lamps under the steering column.
What does the switch look like?

Many thanks,
Geoffrey

Very basic advice; check every fuse.

My heater motor fuse blew a couple of months ago and it took out the ignition circuit, they aren't linked on the wiring diagrams but obviously were in practice.

I am thinking that maybe the water pump jammed and the fan belt stopped ....could have tripped something , I was not going fast and the pump started turning again , will look for water and fuses tonight .

On the S1 it is one of the rotary switches above the radio. On mine it was nearest the drivers side but that doesnt seem to be the case in every car. There is nothing on mine below the steering column.

There are some resistors on the bulkhead to control the dimming aspect of the illumination. They might have corked it, worth checking!

Yes, under bonnet look into the mouth of the transmission tunnel, drivers side. Should be 2 large ceramic resistors.

I think an Alien must have got into the car !! The light control was off and I didn't do it , however the car had been worked on that day and I guess the mechanic must have turned it for some reason .

Will be checking the fan-belt in daylight for tension - thanks for your help all .
