Need a new wiper relay/timer tomorrow

Hi All

Off to France on Friday in the TVR, driving the car today noticed that the wipers don't park and the intermittent doesn't work. The relay is just clicking.

Any idea if this is a TVR specific part or can I source one locally tomorrow?

I think its a mk3 cavalier item? So a decent local factors should have one I would think.

When mine developed this problem it was cured by replacing the wiper park switch which is from classic mini & many other cars of the same era (Land Rover, MG, Triumph etc). Just had a quick look around & I'm pretty sure that the Lucas part number is 520160a.

Your problem is probably not relay related, it's much more likely to be the wiper motor park switch.

The park switch sits on the wiper motor at a low point on the N/S front scuttle where a puddle of water collects, the park switch connector is therefore very susceptible to corrosion of it's contacts.

The good news is the same Lucas wiper park switch is used on many British cars and most commonly appears on the classic Mini, it is therefore cheap & readily available.

This is what you need...

You can buy just the switch for about £7.00 but I recommend you push the boat out to do the job properly and pay £14 for the switch and its associated connector as the contacts corrode equally on both.

To fit the new switch and connector first operate your wipers stopping them on the ignition key so they are pointing vertically on the screen, this makes fitting the switch so much easier.

Next, remove the motor to scuttle mount so you can turn the wiper motor a bit to get better access to the the switch, pull the connector, fit the new switch and replace the corroded connector with your new one. Your new connector should come with the wiring ends, make sure you've made a note of the wiring colours and positions in the connector block before you dismantle it or take a photo on your phone for reference.

Pack the newly fitted connector with a little Vaseline to avoid the problem repeating itself, connect up, re-mount the motor to the scuttle and test the wiper operation and parking function.

Hi All

Appreciate the info. I have a newer model, it has a different wiper motor located under the dash to the right of the steering column so the park switch arrangement is different.

I've ordered a relay from TVR Parts, hopefully it will arrive in the morning before I leave.
