Probably been done to death, probably a simple question with a simple answer, but here it is:

If the road surface around a longstanding, old-fashioned, original-style Gatso has been renewed, several months ago, and there are consequently no Gatso measurement lines in place, (other road markings, ie lane lines, have been replaced), can the Gatso still be used to bring a prosecution for speeding? Or are they reliant on the road markings to confirm speed (notwithstanding that the gubbins in the camera can calculate that you were going too fast)?

No, I haven't been caught, no I don't ignore Gatsos, but there are two on my commute where this applies and I just wondered.

Gatso Type 24 units are approved for use without any timing marks on the road surface.

Everytime I've seen this, it has been the old film camera based Gatso and not a digital camera.

I've always assumed that is just one of the majority of Gatso boxes that are not actually used and don't have a camera inside.

That's my theory, I'm not going to test it out by driving past one at 80mph while giving it the finger.

I guess you're talking about the Rochester Way? Won't worry about it, they are set to be replaced with average speed soon so I think they're off.

Going to be frustrating as off peak 50+ isn't unreasonable but at least they aren't lowering it, there were rumours they might raise it to 60 but I very much doubt it.

Yes, and also the mad mile on the A20 at Mottingham. I hadn't heard about the average speed cameras but it kinda makes sense, there's not many people who stick to the limit there when traffic allows! Let's hope they're front-facing wink although I'm sure they won't be.

Thanks.

They re-surfaced a 50 limit DC near us with the old big yellow cameras def not digital and they still haven't re-painted any lines on the road around 4 months after the work has finished

There are a couple of Gatsos on the A303 with no accompanying road makings, both westbound- one at Chicklade and the other on the Ilchester bypass

East End, innit. More an extension westwards of Essex than an extension eastwards of the civilised area Have you ever tried driving to the speed limit while wearing white stilettos? Bit of a challenge, I can tell you.

I ignore this one daily with no ill effects smile

Although the police regularly plot up underneath it with a gun....

I'm not sure you can argue that London is a civilised area.

London is the only civilised area of the UK, except for parts of Edinburgh. I now live in exile about 45 miles west of London (economic migrant, not refugee), but South Oxon is almost a London suburb with extra big parks, so I can just about survive it, although it's a grind.

As for the stiletto colour choice, for some reason, when you wear white ones your IQ drops.

Same in Warrington, A49 outside the Ford dealership, heading to motorway M62

New surface.
All other lines replaced, but no Gatso lines

Is a Type 24 the standard big yellow box that we know and loathe?
