Some scrote decided to steal my camera on Friday Night and I was not best pleased to say the least. However that does give me £300 to replace it with!

I have been looking at the Canon Ixus 40 and the Sony Cybershot in slim or standard size. I will probably be including a 512MB memory card in the price as well.

What can anyone recommend at this money and does anyone know of any good prices floating around out there? I have looked a lot on pricerunner.com which seems to give the best deals, but if anyone can come up with another answer that would be good!

Thanks

I posted in MarkMullen's thread about the IXUS i5... its sub £240 which will give you some change for a decent memory card.

I had a good look around and decided on the Canon PowerShot S60 just after Christmas. It's not the smallest or lightest of cameras bit it seems to take good pictures so far. The Ixus' are good too, a friend of mine has one and it's very good. The Pentax Optio S5i is very good too.

Have a look here:

www.dcresource.com/

Then go into shop and try the ones on your shortlist, then go to www.froogle.co.uk and get it there cheaper!

2nd hand Canon D30, such as:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=30012&item=3870525444&rd=1

that's unless you're looking for something that weighs less than 14tonnes and is vaguely portable. In which case, and Ixus of some discription would be good.

I recently got a Sony Cybershot DSC-W12 - £214 from www.pixmania.co.uk which leaves you enough cash for a decent sized memory stick pro. Does good 30fps VGA movies too

Thanks for the ideas folks, keep them coming

The total funds I have available from the insurers are £289.00 which will hopefully include a 512MB memory card pro and if possible I could sneak a camera case in there as well.

Price runner is showing a 7.2mega pixel Cybershot slimline at £239.00 and the Canon Ixus 40 at a best price £211.00

I am going to add a 512 card as well which I have found for circa £50 and the case shouldn't be much over a tenner should it??

Is it possible to get a higher megapixel Ixus than the 4.0Mpx of the Ixus 40??

At the moment it looks like the cybershot is going to be replaced with the newer model of the same camera, does that sound like a fair choice??

Thanks

Does depend on what you want in terms of features but if small, convenient and 5Mp with fast start up appeals have a good look at the Pentax S5i - a couple of places seem to offering for just under 200 now so should be in budget.

Fantastic car by the way

I have chosen to go for the cybershot I think, it's the camera I am used to and seems to do everything I need very well. I am not sure of the difference between the two styles of cybershot that are available:

The flat, rectangle shaped one like this:
www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/56757/art/sony/cyber-shot-dsc-t3-silver.html

and the standard style like this:
www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/46149/art/sony/cybershot-dsc-p93.html

What are the differences if any? The flat one has a larger screen but they share virtually everything else in common. The only thing is that the standard camera has 7.2Mpx and the flat one only goes up to 5.1Mpx as far as I can see.

Which one should I go for and is the difference in Mpx necessarily vital??

Yes, a great car. Wish it was mine but sadly not.

Re Megapixels - won't make a lot of difference, probably, unless you plan to print very large pics. But as I don't have eirter model it would be best to sample them for youself.

Thanks for that Grant.
I think it is a contest between the Cybershot models, i.e. the flat one and the slimline original.
Should get it sorted soon enough!
