Ok, we had the best guitar solo thread and the best this and that, but what about the greatest ever line-up at a gig. I don’t mean festivals where lots of great artists play over the weekend, but artists on stage together.

One obvious choice is Live Aid, but for me the greatest ever has to be at the end of The Band’s Last Waltz, playing Dylan’s “I shall be released”

Onstage were amongst others Joni Mitchell, Niel Young, Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, Dr John, Ronnie Hawkins, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, and obviously The Band.

Anyone got any other suggestions?

Regards,
Iain

Night of the Guitars tour 1988

Leslie West (Mountain)
Pete Haycock (Climax Blues Band) (*fab!)
Steve Howe (Yes)
Steve Hunter (Alice Cooper/Peter Gabriel/session dude)
Andy Powell (Wishbone Ash)
Ted Turner (Wishbone Ash)
Robbie Kreiger (The Doors)
Alvin Lee (Ten years After)
Randy California (Spirit)

Each with a 15-20 minute spot, lots of additional guest jamming and a finale featuring all of them playing together.

Admittedly perhaps not so impressive, if you don't like 70's rock music I suppose!

As a drummer myself, i quite like his ham fisted style. I think alot of the bad name Ringo got was put about by friends of Pete Best. Anyway, we digress.

Camp Freddy, the LA charity super-group.

Every show has different guests and so far the stage has included Steve Jones (Sex Pistols), Slash, Duff & Matt Sorum (Guns N Roses), Dave Navarro & Perry Farrell (Jane's Addiction), Moby, Jerry Cantrell (Alice in Chains), George Clinton, Michael Des Barres, Courtney Love (Hole), Lemmy (Motorhead), Linda Perry (4 non Blondes), Robbie Williams, Cheryl Crow...

Would kill to see one of their shows

Kenny Wheeler, John Abercrombie, Dave Holland and Lee Konitz in a drumerless quartet back in 97 ish.
All of them legends. A kit would've been nice though behind them, someone careful like Paul Motian or Joey Baron.

And I thought I was lucky seeing Oasis being supported by Richard Ashcroft...

Alomst as good as the Pumpkins' gig which featured the soon-to-be sacked drummer, the soon-to-be replacement drummer, the soon-to-be dead keyboard player and the regular band.

Oh I would have loved to see that! This one gets my vote too!

Can I also mention the bass player (appeared on Pete Haycock's album (Guitar and Son?)) Livingstone Brown!

Has anyone got a copy of this on DVD or CD? Know where I can get a copy? I've only got a mankey tape copy off the TV

(Also the first Guitar Speak album?)

.

You may!! He was Pete's in-house bass player in the mid-late 80's and I saw him with "H" several times. But Climax Blues' Derek Holt, who was actually the main bassist on the tour, is my absolute favourite bassist, so I can'T let this go by without giving him a name check to!

I've got N.O.T.G vols 1 and 2 from this tour on VHS (official release jobbies) if thats any use. You can have a lend and do any copying you want, if you like? Email me via my profe!

Don't think I've got the Guitar Speak album any more, but I'll have a check. At the time I was mad keen on the Guitar Speak concept and had the first 5 or 6 releases from the series and went to a couple of the gigs........

Happy daze!

Well personally the greatest line up, without question that I ever saw at a gig consisted of just 4 blokes; Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Bonham and John-Paul Jones.

Eric Clapton's 1986 concert was pretty good, I thought, but not the "Greatest Line Up at a Gig...Ever", I hasten to add.

It was
* Eric Clapton (obviously)
* Phil Collins (who could still drum back then, although a shadow of his prime)
* Greg Phillinganes (keyboards)
* Nathan East (bass guitar)

Joni Mitchell toured in about 1980 with a band formed mostly from people with solo careers in their own right.

With her were:-

Pat Metheney (guitar)
Michael Brecker (sax)
Don Alias (drums/congas)
Lyle Mays (keys)
Jaco Pastorius (bass)

A collection of true jazz greats all on stage at the same time - class stuff. Check out Joni's "Shadows & Light" DVD - recorded on this tour.

Saw it on saturday, and you're not wrong. Bloody amazing gig, all the bands were outstanding. The first 3 bands were much more impressive then their albums might suggest, and The Killers were brilliant.

Cheers,
Rob.

Hmm, not so sure. EC and Nathan East were and still are the best at their craft, but I'm not sure which of the other two I'd hit first with a rusty spanner given the chance - Greg sounded like a crap waltzer and Phil is just so enduringly irritating.

Sadly, it's Clapton's persistant use of that sort of keyboard, and recently the hammond organ (that's you Billy Preston) that really spoils his otherwise glorious return to the blues. Bit like a perfectly cooked bit of steak, which the chef then decides to garnish with some dairylea.

For me, it has to be the "Louisiana Gator Boys" at the end of Blues Brothers 2000.

BB King, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, Gary U.S. Bonds, Eric Clapton, Clarence Clemons, Jack DeJohnette, Bob Didley, Jon Faddis, Isaac Hays, Dr. John, Tommy McDonnell, Charlie Musselwhite, Billy Preston, Lou Rawls, Joshua Redman, Koko Taylor, Travis Tritt, Jimmie Vaughan, Grover Washington, Jr., Willie Weeks and Steve Winwood.

There was a nice lineup in my uni lecture room the other day, when I was soloing on my sax to Mabel (Kenny Wheeler tune), with John Taylor (*the* John Taylor!) accompanying me on the piano.

Other than that, I saw Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland and Brian Blade play at a jazz festival last summer. That was an experience!!!
