Hi all,

First time Mercedes owner after a long line of E46 BMWs (including 3 x M3) and 90’s turbos (200SX/Fiat Coupe). See my car history thread here http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=1&a... if you’re at all interested.

Love the car and it feels a massive step up after staring at E46 dashboards the last 6 years. Got a few questions that I’m hoping fellow owners might have encountered (Car is an 05 plate with Command NTG 1.0) :

• Intermittent no attempt to start – Happened twice since I’ve had the car, insert the key, twist and nothing. No attempt to start, dash lights as normal. Previous owner pre-warned me about this, as he called out Mobilo when the problem occurred. The guy identified it as relay in the box at the top left of the engine bay (drivers side – SAM?). Apparently the breakdown guy just pushed the relays down square and it started. On the two occasions I’ve had this error, I’ve repeated this advice and taken the cover off the box and pressed each of the relays/fuses down. After a few failed attempts ive managed to get it to start using this technique but I’ve no idea which exact relay it is and what the underlying issue is. Anyone had this fault?
• Bluetooth – Trying to pair my Galaxy S4 with the Command. I can get it to authorise the phone (I get a prompt on the phone for a code, which I then repeat onto Command itself) but not connect. I’m just using a random 4 digit number and it doesn’t say it’s wrong, but should I be using a specific Mercedes code? Do I need to buy anything to pair a modern phone – I see people talking about Viseed (sp?) adaptor? In the centre console I have a cradle.
• Sat Nav – I have the original disc, V4 or something. By the looks of it, Mercedes are on V16/17 now. However, when using the NAV I get no maps just a arrow/compass in the middle of nowhere and a message saying something along the lines of “Off Map”. Now this is in areas that have been around for 100 years not new build estates which I could understand might not show on the old maps. Is this a disc/settings fault or is something else amiss here?
• Cup holders – An admittedly minor bugbear but I had got used to having a cupholder on my last M3. I see there’s a pop up version on Ebay but I’ve read it’s actually designed for a LHD car so the drink doesn’t actually sit where you want it to? I’ve also seen a two cup holder with silver rings around the top on CLS63 cars, does this part fit the earlier 55K car or did they slightly tweak the centre console?

Any pointers/advice would be much appreciated.

Great car, congrats.

I've got 2005 E Class and if it has the same set up as mine there will be a specific code. I managed to hunt down the manual for mine when I bought the car and code was in it. Anyway, you have to follow the correct sequence and enter the correct code at the appropriate point. A quick Google found this;

On the phone pairing, and somewhat annoyingly for a German car in the UK, the pairing code to enter on the phone spells out MBUSA - easier to remember I suppose than the 5 digits.

My car (diesel, sadly) still runs its original 2006 navigation DVD - it knows where it is, even if the road has moved since then, so it sounds like there could be a fault somewhere, possibly with the feed from the GPS aerial I'm guessing.

On the cupholder, I have the LHD MB item - yes, the driver's section is on the wrong side, but it's not that bad, particularly as it's an automatic so you are not having to move a gear lever when certainly it would be a nuisance. As far as I know, the twin circular holders do need some alterations to the centre console.

Thanks for the advice so far guys.

RE: Bluetooth - Thanks for the links, I've tried the MBUSA code to no avail. The phone briefly shows as connected (a second or two tops) and then drops. Further reading suggests i have the UHI system fitted from 2004 onwards, i should have probably said i have a phone specific cradle in the centre console (either an old Nokia or Iphone - not looked properly yet and neither are any good for my Samsung anyway). Most things i've read seem to suggest i need a Viseeo MB4 or Mercedes HPF adaptor to connect my phone but that these will just do the phone functions and not play music via bluetooth. Apparently the MB3 will do music but via FM not bluetooth and there seems less of these around. So i'm unsure my next move here. Anyone sorted out bluetooth phone & music another way on a similar vintage Merc?

RE: Sat NAV - thanks to the poster above who said GPS antenna regarding my "OFF MAP" error. Bit of further reading and playing with COMMAND (0 satelite count in MAP screen) suggests this is very likely the cause. I've got a replacement GPS antenna ordered so will see if that solves the problem.

RE : Rare starting issue - Still none the wiser on this? It hasn't done it again yet.

RE : Cupholders - Still trying to establish whether the two cup version fitted to the CLS63 will fit? My guess is no as i'm sure there would be a thread on one of forums with somebody who has done it. Might just give the LHD pop up version a whirl

I've got the HPF adaptor (I think) - it's the one pictured in the link I sent you. It just Bluetooths phone calls and address book. No music.

Re the starting problem. If it only happens when the engine is hot it may be the crank sensor. The symptoms are that the car will start fine from cold but won't restart if you turn it off when it's warmed up. If you leave it half an hour it starts fine. Just a thought.

Had a cls 500
Only way on pre 08 cars to get BT is a viseeo
Cheaper than original and good for phone and adress that is
Don t buy a MB 3 they are crap
No music from iPhone
There are cup holders in the rear armrest ( not much help)
Not sure about the starting
The other satnav thingy could be an issue with the dvd
Did u check in boot?
Is it clean? Does the player work
Be careful when buying upgrades they are models specific ( e class will not always work)
