'CURB THE SPEED FREAKS'

Harsher punishments for serious offenders and a greater investment in policing are some of the suggestions put forward by the RAC to curb excessive speeding on Britain's roads.

More than half of British motorists admit to regularly ignoring speed limits, according to the organisation.

It believes current police enforcement techniques are not working, with the most common reason given for continued speeding is the slim chance of being caught.

The 2005 RAC Report on Motoring found that 57% of drivers break the motorway speed limit and almost two-thirds break 30mph speed limits - despite speed being the cause of one-third of all fatal accidents.

Overall, 42% of motorists said they would stop speeding if they thought they faced an immediate 12-month ban but only around 33% would respond if they faced a one-month ban.

RAC spokesman Philip Hale said: "More effective deterrents do need serious and urgent consideration."

The organisation suggests graduated penalties; mandatory driver re-training after a speeding ban; electronic tracking for serious offenders and more investment in high visibility traffic policing

ONE THIRD LIE

“the number one reason for motorists to continue speeding is that they don’t think they are going to get caught” – the fundamental reason is that the limits are too low (only 70 on a motorway, lowest in Europe?)

“driver re-training” - Did we ever get proper training in the first place? (or in the case of motorways, any training at all?)

“the number of drivers going too fast is up by 10% in 2004” - Yet driver speed in general is going down! Sounds contradictory but makes sense when you realise speed limits are continually being lowered, to below natural driving speeds. What a great piece of spin.

“The RAC want stiffer penalties like instant 12 month bans” - Do they want our business?

posted to News@sky.com. I Suggest everybody mails to complain. I have already mailed the newsroom at Radio Aire the local station spreading this Manure.

Hello,

I note you are running the "55% of all drivers admit to speeding" story this morning. I also note that you are using an incorrect fact at the end of the story. The "one-third of all accidents are caused by speeding" statement is incorrect. Only 5% of accidents are caused by drivers exceeding the Speed limit. If accidents caused by "Inappropriate Speed" within the speed limit are added this rises to 7%. This does not equate to "33%" as perpetuated by your report. The authorities no longer use this figure as it has been challenged and proved incorrect. I would expect a news program to check it's facts before broadcast and am disappointed by this attempt to continue the use of a discredited "fact". I expect this to be removed from your bulletins and will complain to the appropriate authority if it is not.

Jeremy Hunt.

Seems the RAC sent out this piece of crap! I have recieved this from Radio Aire.

Jeremy,

This is the press release we received from the RAC. As you can see, it states that one third of all fatal accidents are caused by speeding. This is what we have been reporting this morning.

Regards,

Emma Glasbey

Speeding epidemic spreads as 15 million break limits ‘most days’, reveals RAC

A speeding epidemic is taking hold on Britain’s roads as 55 per cent of drivers - equivalent to 15 million people - admit to breaking limits ‘most days’.

The 2005 RAC Report on Motoring, launched today, reveals the number of drivers speeding regularly is up almost 10 per cent on a year ago. Overall, 57 per cent of drivers break the motorway speed limit and almost two-thirds break 30mph speed limits - despite speed being the cause of one-third of all fatal accidents.

Current enforcement levels have little impact; the most common reason given for continued speeding is the small chance of being caught - something RAC has termed ‘driving under the radar’.

Said RAC spokesman Philip Hale: "We have something of a speeding epidemic on our hands.

"More motorists than ever are admitting to disorder on the roads. Overall, 16 per cent - or four million British drivers - do not consider themselves law-abiding, almost double last year’s figure.

"Enough people to fill 10 commercial holiday jets die every year on Britain’s roads. Individual motorists know these risks, yet choose to ignore them - drivers are speeding undeterred on all types of road, at all times of day, every day of the week and would only respond to the harshest penalties. While extreme actions may not be practical, more effective deterrents do need serious and urgent consideration."

Motorists admitted to RAC that the greatest deterrents would be a highly visible traffic police presence and draconian penalties including instant 12-month bans and in-car ‘black-box’ tracking systems to detect speeding offences.

Overall, 42 per cent of motorists would stop speeding if they thought they faced an immediate 12-month ban, while 48 per cent would change the way they drive if their car was fitted with an electronic tracking device - but only a third would respond if they faced a one-month ban.

Any body know if this is the RAC Foundation or the Company. I suspect the foundation as their site wants cameras.

Oh bl00dy hell....more BS with scary conclusions:

In-car spy best to curb speeding drivers

DRIVERS who persistently break the speed limit should be forced to fit electronic tracking devices to their cars that would detect speeding, the RAC says in a report published today.

......
An RAC spokeswoman said: “More than 30,000 drivers lose their licences each year after getting a fourth three-point speeding penalty. A black box could be an alternative to a ban, which can cost people their livelihoods.”

So adding a black box, which will inform the authorities of each and every moment you exceed the speed limit, will reduce the chance of getting a ban?

If this really is introduced, drivers permanently looking at their speedos helps reduce the accident rate HOW?

I notice the 1/3 lie is in here too.

I'll vote with my feet. I'm currently an RAC member, I'll make sure they know why I will not be renewing. (I would like to add the RAC were utterly useless when my immobiliser permanently immobilised - worst service ever!)

The RAC Foundation is no longer affiliated to the breakdown recovery organisation, and I'm guessing this manure has emanated from the Foundation.

Ranting at the RAC recovery org will not do much, as a result.

As for the foundation...we're not members, so they can do what they like!

I've got to stop reading all this stuff - my blood pressure is too high as is, and this really isn't helping.

Hey Martin. Will a pint help lower it?

So what is the RAC 'foundation' good for? Is it some sort of government sponsored think tank?

Nah,

They used to own the recovery side, but flogged it to Lex Auto-whatever. So now they're just a bunch of with too much money, too many opinions, and too few brain cells.

It's the RAC FOUNDATION you want..

Posted this earlier on General Gassing.....

RAC foundation.....

Here you go, from their website www.racfoundation.org

The RAC Foundation’s remit to protect motorists’ interests means that we welcome opinions and feedback on any of the wide ranging issues that have a direct bearing on day to day driving.

In particular, many stories that hit the headlines are sensationalised within the media and it is often difficult to determine whether we are witnessing a clear trend or simply isolated, but high profile, incidents. Car-jacking is a prime example and in fact there is currently little hard data or research to determine how widespread this phenomenon is.

The RAC Foundation is therefore keen to learn of your experiences in a number of key areas in order to build up a database of first hand evidence. If you feel you are able to make a contribution to any of the following topics then please click here

Go on, then, get on with it.........

They are usually very careful to include the fact that the report is from the RAC Foundation when it is. I didn't notice any such reference in the report. IMO, this report did not come from the Foundation, it came from the Recovery operation.
