Gents advice please. Gearbox works fine most of the time - except for crap 5 and 6th ratios! But when giving it full beans it often refuses to go from 2nd to 3rd and it actually feels like the clutch goes soft but can not be to sure as it all happens so fast! Could the thrust bearing be spinning so fast it boiling the clutch fluid or something like that? Has anyone else had similar problems?

Sorry should have done a search first as I think I have answered my problem - guess I have got to try to a fluid change!

Are you still on the original clutch? The LS7 clutch solved my fluid/dirt problems.

You will find that the clutch plate debris will float to the top into the reservoir, and will build up and up until the whole line is full, best to just syringe all the oil and crap out of reservoir every couple of months and top up with fresh fluid, onlt takes a few mins to do, never had a problem with my clutch in its 70k mile life.

Count your blessings if you are on the original slave cylinder, they seem to go after ~8 years irrespective of mileage...mine went at ~36k IIRC.

Yes, if it's black, change what you can. If you can fit a remote bleed hose to your Escort, you can bleed the whole system a lot easier. smile

I fitted a remote bleed so guess a full flush and bleed will be required.

I flushed the old fluid out last night but need a second pair of hands/foot to bleed before a test drive. Old fluid was black after only 1200 miles - yes most very spirited diving and some of the black st could have been in the slave cylinder before building the escort but it does beg the following. Why does it happen in the first place after all it should be a sealed system complete with dust seals. Most other manufacturers use the same set-up now with out problems. And I wonder if a larger cylinder with more fluid would help?

it's just because of the design of the fluid seal and where the slave is located. It's just a dirty environment.

Get a vacuum/pressure type bleeder or Mityvac etc makes bleeding anything a doddle and very handy to have.

As for dirty fluid, it just happens, and usually takes a very long time before any ill effects are noticed.
Larger reservoir may just mean it takes a little bit longer. But it can do no harm to bleed the system every now and again anyway with fresh fluid.
But at only 1200miles it shouldnt be giving any problems

It does seem to have contaminated very quickly. Even if there was crap left in the slave from the engines previous life! I think I would have commissioned the clutch at least twice during the build too.

They all get dirty, unless it's terrible it's not a big deal.

Clutch bleed but after a right chew on. My mate Mark suggested bleeding with the engine running and sure enough out popped the last of the air bubbles!
