tvr 350i hunting

Hello everybody my name is Paul. just joined piston heads
got myself a wedge 350i which is hunting on tick over then isn't then is. also when hunting engine runs rough and over run goes quiet. then runs normal over run kicks in to life car drives great. condition can change on the turn of a key. car was running rough at a set of lights but before it went green it ran ok again. done lots of voltage and ohms tests on AFM AND TEMP SENSOR AND SOME OF THE RELAYS SO FAR but to no avail jet.
in 20011 1st feb a member posted that is 350i was doing exactly the same thing as mine in every way. on the thread sadly it does not tell you what the out come was. the members name was roodboy or Martin 350.does any one no this person or the out come of his problem. I have tried to email him but without any luck.

As Zig says air leaks are a common cause and they can also happen through the crankcase. Blow down the breather pipe off the flame trap, it should feel like blowing up a balloon - if not then investigate the rocker cover gaskets/tighten the screws holding the covers down.
Also check the "mushroom" breather pinhole (on the other rocker cover) is clear. Stick a pin down it to clear out crud.

As said..But for crying out loud don't drop the needle down it...They can be removed as they are only pushed in, However it will be almost impossible to remove with a cold engine...I had a friend who nearly bent one trying to get it out and when he turned up to a meet one morning i took an open ended spanner, Placed it underneath it and tapped it up and out it came...Needless to say he was well impressed ...Also check the "mushroom" breather pinhole (on the other rocker cover) is clear. Also be careful when removing the little plastic clip on filter housing...They break....I would replace the foam and check also that the flame trap is not caked up...A new one would be worth buying but if the steel gauze is okay then you can clean it with some petrol or brake & Clutch cleaner poured through and a little shake...(I think his name is Habib)

If it's none of the above, it could be electrical. Spark plugs, leads, ignition module, timing and advance mechanism etc. Speak to Keith on here (KKson) as he is having similar problems at the moment with his Wedge and may be able to advise you further.

If you are lonking at electrical do the free stuff first:
a) Clean each end of all the earth straps - battery-engine, gearbox-chassis, coil-alternator - then do them up tight.
b) clean contacts of ECU and sensors, Throttle pot and Airflow Meter, usually a remove and refit a few times is enough, add some electrolube if you have some.
c) as mentioned above clean the resistor pack terminals.
Other stuff to clean/check:
1) clean the throttle butterfly which sometimes gets gummed up with black crud.
2) check the TPS middle voltage is 0.325V when throttle is shut
3) clean the breather gallery from the breather hose into the plenum side
4) make sure the breather hose isn't totally clogged. Clean it out anyway.
There you go - three hours in the garage fettling and not a pound spent ;^)

hi pluged in a spare ecu ran great for a couple of days then problems returned.no air leaks.had cryton tune man check spark ect car was running fine while he was testing nothing showed up.one time you want it to run crap and it lets you down, AFM checked internals they look like new flapper volts look normal with no dead spots,throttle pot volts correct.
Having had the 3.5 for years in Rangies I have a two step procedure when hunting appears on tickover.
The first thing I do is look for loose or cracked hoses, breathers etc. The second thing is that I keep a new 2AM AFM in the cupboard and I swap that on as it's always been the most efficient way to comprehensively test the AFM.
In 20 odd years I've not had to look beyond these to find the issue.
In fact the most recent episode didn't even get that far. Having driven out to see a friend the car hunted all the way on tickover and when I pooped the bonnet at the other end my friend soon noticed, while I was checking pipes, that I'd left the oil filler cap off after topping up the oil that morning.

Personally i still think its an air leak...Have you checked ALL the hoses and as Donkeyapple say's for "Cracks"?...Also check the vacuum from plenum to FPR....I remembered what was causing my hunting...The idle control valve housing was a bit loose..(Little cup shape located on the bulkhead side of the plenum...In case you don't know)..It was only a couple of turns on the screws but thats enough with the vacuum the V8 draws when pedal is applied....
If you think its timing related then it could also be the vacuum diaphragm failing....Or the bob weights might need some lube...Hopefully not failing!....Check the simple things first or you will be in the mist with your pants down.....Gorilla's are not that friendly!!!

Hi just done a few test on the car. AFM throttle flapper volts at temperature engine running and hunting and spluttering flapper volts good no dead spots nice and smooth also same conditions throttle pot o.325 to 4.2 smooth no dead spots. need to retest at ECU but seems AFM and THROTTLE POT are good.
