One of our contractors had their premises broken into last night in Hampshire. All their stuff is securely in 3 large shipping containers but despite this they got in and took loads of tools. They couldn't steal the trailer so jacked it up and stole the wheels. Complete PITA. The issue is that now the *****ers know about the yard and so our contractors are wondering if it will ever bee safe to leave their stuff their. I didn't know what to say.

Im sure after that security will be increased. Cameras, dog even, etc. Tell them about new increased security to make sure this doesnt happen again. If no increased security then they are quit right to be worried.

No doubt, once the insurance pays out, the same lowlife will be back.

Good CCTV is cheap these days, set-up to a suitable NAS server and give everyone remote access for peace of mind.

Is there any point unless someone is watching 24/7? For example a security company who I assume watch the cameras and as soon as they see something they call the Police?

How exactly did they get in?
All you can do is make it harder or simply take tools home. Once you concentrate everything in one area they know what to hit, messy building sites are often the hardest ones to steal from in bulk, pull the lighting fuse on the way out and they'll have a long job finding tools scattered all over the place and hidden in strange places....

All the kit was in shipping containers. The lock was shielded with a big plate so you can't break it off but they levered the whole protective plate up and then got to the lock. Without a big guard dog or on site security what can they do?

Then you need to make it better than it was before - my container has a lock shield made from 6mm plate welded to the frame of the door, there is no way someone could lever it off.

The harder you make it, the less likely they are to try, but like I noted whilst ever they know where to hit a concentration of tools they will. They could (in theory) use even heavier tools such as cordless grinders, but it's unlikely.

Poison/sleeping pills in meat works well there.

I have been playing around with a system for our own yard, the software is great. You can pick cameras and pixels within the screen and set specific times (ie out of hours only). If triggered it will email you a screenshot and only record video during the time of movement. You could even have the email sent to your client for one specific camera only that might be pointing at their stuff.

BTW I don't sell this stuff, I am just a tight arse and was reluctant to pay £10k when you can do it yourself for ~ £1k+

There is a secure yard across the road from us, they have huge flood lightls and CCTV everywhere. Also they make round trips every now and then to ensure the gate is locked. Anyone who has a container inside gets a key to the main gate and is told to lock up and close once they are finished.

It helps that they are quite well known in the area for being the roughing up type, a few times they have left the yard open, keys in their vans and a petrol pressure washer laying outside and still no one takes it. I used to use them for 2 years and were really nice to me even though I have seen a very nasty side to them with others who try to do something to them.

I think you need to create a new reputation for yourself - works wonders lol.

Although only made for indoor use we use the Nest Cameras from www.nest.com. Work off your wireless network, just need a power socket available.

They have cloud storage straight to the Internet so no need for local hard drives, they begin recording on any sound or image changes, they do not have sensors as such, they take an image of the image and if that changes they start recording and the send a message straight to you PC/iPhone/iPad. You view live images or recorded history straight from your iPhone/Pad and their app is very good.

Their cloud recording service is not live just yet (only released the cameras in July this year) so I am still using their free trial service and then it's £16/mo for the 1st camera, £8/mo for subsequent cameras. Records up to 30 days worth.

They have good night vision although I get some reflection from the window looking out on my driveway.

Worth a look.
Cheers

Without giving specific details we had a break at the business next door to mine recently and we had to provide our CCTV and I saw theirs too.

It was like something from a film, well planned, executed and very successful. The whole op lasted from dusk till dawn probably 10 men involved we estimate. Both properties have large CCTV systems, communicated alarms and the business between the 2 of us also has 24/7 security.

My point is, you will never stop it. The first we knew was 8am the morning after.
They must have spent a few weeks planning how they were going to do it.

And to make matters worse the police were frankly not all that interested.
