Looking for honest advice I need to change my car for a much more economical one as I live in Sunderland and travel to London and back every week for work. I have decided I would like a vw golf or Jetta tdi but which one would be best for me. I know the 1.6 boast good mpg but would the 2.0 be better but still return good mpg bearing in mind about 80% of my time will be motorway miles. I'd like to hear from people with experience as I know the official stated mpg' are a load of rubbish.

Don't know what age you are buying but the 2.0 140 in the mk6 would be my pick. It's punchy reliable and will average over 50mpg all day as long as you don't thrash. The 1.6 only realistically only does high 50s and is a bit gutless

Saw your just looking at 1.6 / 2.0 have you looked at 1.9?
Ive just bought a MK4 1.9 GT TDI (115) Golf + Chip and averages out 60mpg+ on Motorway cruising, if this is any help...

Im a fan of the 2.0 140, very pokey for everyday driving and would guess it returns somewhere in the low 50's although ive never clocked ours.

Depends how you drive.

The 1.6TDI passat I have is not fast, but it never feels especially slow either. The only time you really feel a lack of power is overtaking on a country road.

If you cruise at 70 MPH it will do 60MPG.

Same here and good reliability too from the Common Rail version. Mine used to consistently return mid-50s MPG

I am favouring the 2ltr as I like a bit of power when needed. I think I'm just worried the 1.6 may be a bit gutless on the motorway

I drive the 2.0 TDI 150 and I'm getting 55 on average. Highest has been 67 and lowest 42 (both over 500 miles)
