Side windows - removal and refurb
Discussion
Hi folks, I'm slowly but surely ironing out a few niggles that have crept in over the summer. Next on the list is the drivers and passengers windows...
So I know these aren't great at the best of times, but mine have stopped going all the way up and now need to be combined with a hefty pull to get them all the way to the top. The felt channel looks pretty knackered so I've ordered some from woolies but cant for the life of me work out how to get window and runners etc out to give everything a good overhaul?!
I've searched high and low on the site, but cant find any info on who to get everything out; anyone able to help?

Take the door card off - remove the window winder and prise off the clips, once the card is loose then push up to disengage the top edge. The glass has a metal lower edge and bracket bolted to the angled slider. Undo the two bolts and the glass should waggle out by lowering the front edge and lifting the rear. You may have to loosen the front ally runner - 4 screws on the outside and a forward facing bolt into the door frame.
Be careful with the 'hefty pull', the window winding mechanism is not that strong, or strongly mounted, and forcing it risks much worse damage. With the door card off it should be possible to see what is making it tight and lubricate it to free it all off. Clean off excessive lubricant afterwards or it will get covered in dirt washed down the glass. It isnt that difficult to get the whole lot out and I did it for both mine. I found that someone had forced the drivers frame in at the top and bent it very slightly, the correct solution would have been to move the frame mounting at the bottom of the door. Very gently straightening it made a big difference. I also found that a little candle wax rubbed into the felt tracks worked well.
Before taking the frasme out look carefully at the mountings that magpies has described. Are all the mountings secure? If not then you will have to decide how to make them secure. I needed to repair one loose mounting at the bottom where the bolt had come loose and the hole in the alloy was oversize, in that case a better, serrated, washer did the job. But the four screws at the joint of the frame to the top front of the door no longer hold properly and they are the main support. I think I am going to finish up using new g.r.p. to thicken the door in that area. It has become obvious since the hood was renewed and the seal to the top of the door is now tighter.
Any DIY S owner should have a 'Steve Heath' manual, pages 244-246 cover the door and window.
