So there I was all smug over choosing a petrol over a diesel, when I thought, hang on, what if...

Anybody thinking I should hold off on an order and wait to see if prices start to tumble on their range or is that very wishful thinking?

Fact is they have just lost the ability to sell the CORE of their range portfolio. They will need sales to offset this loss and this fine.

Crazy days.

You're buying brand new I assume?

Prices won't fall overnight due to this. I'd expect the effect on the private buyer to be negligible

Really? Why not...surely if you can't sell a slug of cars and people are driven away from a brand by a perception of false economy driving then the Ops team will be keen to start slapping windscreens.

But as you say, could take ages.

Highly unlikely that pricing structure will change in any meaningful sense. They may sell a few less (esp. diesels!) but most folk aren't going to be bothered if you think about the average VW customer who pays no attention to the highlighted issues once the noise dies down.

There might be some additional incentive schemes to reinvigorate the brand, but nothing earth shattering IMHO

Leasing would be safer right now!

Or perhaps PCH where you have a guarantee of value.

Highly unlikely, the R is already a cheap car with huge lead times. I doubt Volkswagen will be discounting them.

Depending on the outcome it might slightly lower GFVs for a period, and there might be more promotional activity once the news has died down. But it really depends whether people stop buying them which is unlikely!

I suspect its only a matter of days before other manufacturers come out as having done the same. VW got caught first since they are the only mainstream Euro volume manufacturer selling 4-cyl diesels in the States.

The information we were given yesterday by CAP and Glass Guide was they didn't envisage an effect on used car values. Granted the full picture isn't clear yet, but it was encouraging.
