Trailers in Lane 3
Discussion
had it the other weekend
Seems to be the 4X4 bridgade on the m5 disco 3 going 90 plus with a boat on the back swinging about lane 3, then comes back to lane 2 and nearly takes out car with trailer as totally misjudged the room needed. Gave them funny looks as they passed me, looked right back at me like whats the issue.
Q3 doing the same with big jetski trailer. 5 miles later.
Just seems ignorance/arrogance and impatience, think the IQ of the these clowns is dropping watch a stand off with a q3 and xc90 last night trying to get in a small carpark, xc90 coming out into the road and doing some bizarre manoeuvre and the q3 just kept moving forward towards them making the situation worse xc90 kept stopping everytime the q3 moved forward neither of them seem to know what they were doing it was like watching brain damaged toddlers trying to get through a narrow door way! Dash cam lead was not in correctly so it was off such a shame would of made a good video.

As stated the biggest problem for trailer towers is MLM who probably don't realise that a trailer isn't permitted in the outside lane, and sit in the middle lane completely oblivious to the problem they are causing by forcing the overtaking trailer to commit an illegal act whichever side they overtake on.

They aren't forced to overtake. They have the option to not overtake. Also, do cars with trailers not have a lower speed limit than cars without?
Not defending MLMs but the towers have to take a little responsibility for their illegal actions.

As the speed limit for towing is 60mph, MLMs shouldn't be the issue.General t
ttery on the part of the towing driver is more likely to be the issue.Rovinghawk said:

They do, but do all cars not towing stick to the limits they have too? Depending on the trailer and the towing car, 70mph is easily done without any drama at which point MLMs can and do get in the way. I'd happily plead to the better nature of a traffic plod (possibly without success) who pulled me for a lane 3 overtake of someone in the middle lane doing 60.AyBee said:

This thread reminds me of one of my favourite recent 'spots' on my motorway commute.
X5 driver who managed to simultaneously be:
Towing a large trailer.
At around 80mph.
Tailgating the car in front.
On a hand-held phone.
Good skills!
Side question: Are all X5s driven by utter t
ts? It really does seem like that to me, but it could be coincidence.

Had an artic in lane 3 eastbound on the M4 near Bristol on Tuesday. Three HGVS elephant racing.
Depends exactly where mind you these days. If it was between the interchange and the M32 then that's allowed as I believe the new road markings effectively make the M4 eastbound 2 lanes at that point (one is demarked as an M32 filter).thismonkeyhere said:

Speeding (ie over 60mph) and towing a trailer in lane 3.
I was pulled by a marked car once on a near deserted motorway where I had been following two wagons in lanes 1 & 2 for some time elephant racing, there was nothing for miles behind so I popped into L3 passed them and back in just in time to see a marked patrol car on the hard shoulder. Points and a fine for me, he wasn't having a bar of the fact that a ticking off should suffice, it was clear, I wasn't speeding etc etc. Ho Hum...

Several years ago I got 3 points for "overtaking in lane 3", approaching a slip road joining the motorway the car in lane 1 travelling at around 55mph pulled straight into lane 2 with me only a couple of yards behind, I had a choice of hitting it or diving into lane 3 (another vehicle from the slip road was in lane 1), there was a marked police car a couple of hundred yards behind which pulled me over & gave me a ticket, he asked me if I knew the law on trailers in lane 3, I told him that I did & said that surely he had seen the reason, He said that he had & suggested that if I had braked hard I might have been able to avoid the potential accident, I said that I was in a far better position than him to assess that possibility which obviously made me fail the attitude test.
As mentioned MLMs have absolutely no knowledge of trailer law, I tow for around 40% of my driving & see it nearly every day, MLM travelling below the towing speed limit assuming you can go around them in lane 3 & giving you filthy looks when you cruise past in lane 1.

If you exceed the speed limit whilst towing in lane 3 then I'd suggest that any complaints about MLMs are on slightly shaky ground.AyBee said:

Where does it say I'm doing more than 60?AyBee said:

And the MLMs are an issue.
I tow about 70% of the time in my Jeep, cruise control set at near enough the speed limit.
You get someone daydreaming along at 45-55 and the almost crap themselves when you trundle past.
They then floor it to overtake you again, and 3-400 yards further down the road they start daydreaming and drop back to 45-55 so you have to overtake them again

I don't get annoyed, I pity the fools
