Once of my all time favorites.They got them up to circa 1200bhp when they started messing around with turbocharging them in the 70's. As mentioned above, this will have around 600 I think.

A buddy drove 917's and told me a story about the can am derivative. Couldn't put all of the power down because the rims would creep inside the tyres. Good fun though Aparently. I'd dearly love to drive a 917 of any spec.
I had a pack of Top Trumps in the late 70s as a child. It was racing cars - all hues from Formula 1 to rally cars to Le Mans cars. The two most powerful and fastest cars in the pack were both the open Can Am 917s. With well over 1000 hp.
Little did I know as a child that they would remain the most powerful racing cars nearly 40 years on. And even more beautiful with time (the closed Le Mans cars like the OP that is - the Can Am cars themselves weren't as pretty).
Not sure what Mark means about pushbike tyres - width-wise they were like road rollers!
