My Red Rose has reasonably high compression (hence the power, wired liners, copper gaskets etc).
Sometimes the starter turns over slowly when the car is hot. Not a major issue.
I have one of the racetech starters (claimed to be a high kw - or higher than the low kw ones at least!? eg nissan jobs). Just wondering if there is a more powerful version available? I see the powerlite ones on ebay but their website refers to early cerberas. Have changed all the starter cables, extra relay etc So apart from the immobiliser I think the only option is a more powerful starter. Any ideas? thanks

Has the starter got a heat shield fitted?

Wrap or coat the manifolds?

One test you could do is if the engine is hot, get some
Comma 'frost spray'' cool the starter down and see if a over hot
Starter is an issue. (Spray the motor body with an extension tube)
( I did this to diagnose a hot start problem once, worked a treat, pointed to a knackered starter)

So it seems the choices include:-

Nissan - discounted for low KW
Racetech - assume its a tilton and at least standard KW
Powerlite - claimed to be a higher KW but the website says early AJP and the pic looks different
WOSP - on ebay at claimed to be 2.4KW (Modified Denso?) for an AJP (doesnt mention Cerbera though - some call S6s an AJP).
London and Essex auto electrics - do a standard and a 2.4kw that looks the part.

Good post

Post up how you get on if you can as I'd be interested to see what a difference a higher KW starter motor makes

Mine is OK at best, even with high 12V battery so would definitely benefit from a higher cranking!

TBH I found it worse when it was hot with the heat shield matting jacket on, it kept the heat in as it was transfered from the gear box. I Just rep;aced all my Earth leads with 35mm Tig welding cable, a relay fitted to the solenoid & all was good.Mine was a higher compression model & it ate S/motors.

I hope this vid works, but the WOSP starter is very nice - turns over nice and quick.

Fitted today by HHC.

that seemed to turn over well. Was the engine hot?

Warmish.

It had been sitting for about an hour after getting home. I'm just enjoying not having a screeching noise every time I start it.

Do you have any numbers?

My basket case AJP8 ranged from 225 to 260 cold, and I'll have some new figures shortly from the most recent top end rebuild.

I'm curious as to what proper cars have, so if anyone wants to post numbers I'd be very interested.

Mine isnt very old but is starting to struggle when the car is hot. I had to leave the car for 30mins the other day before trying again. I suspect its the high compression.

It's not the power or the lack of power in the starter motor but the poor design of the unit

My Cerb is still on its original starter motor but I cured the hot start problem years a go by modifying the starter motor case.

The problem I found was the lack of end float on the starter motor shaft which in turn once gets hot due to heat soak the motor shaft expands and it then fouls the inside of its case and slowing the starter motor down to the point it wouldn't turn the engine over.

Just a couple of spacer washers on the case assembly cured the problem and it's been perfect for the last 5 years, the Cerb always starts even when it's stinking hot .

thanks Graham. If I had the skills I might be able to try that :-)
