I am going to be doing about 12,000 miles a year and I'm wondering weather I should buy a 270 diesel or a 320 petrol. Not too concerned with performance just want something comfortable.

I will be looking for a 2004/5 with the facelift interior.

Last December I bought a 2005 CLK 320 cdi. It feels very quick, silky smooth and averages 47 mpg on my 50 mile daily commute to the station.

I've done almost 12k miles and only regret I didn't buy one earlier. Can't comment on the 270 CLK but have been massively impressed by the CLK 320 diesel.

Yeah that's the thing. I'm more concerned about potential costs things going wrong with the diesel compared to the mpg savings.

I'd go for the 320 petrol, the M112 engine is very reliable and you should get about 30 MPG out of it. I ran a C280 (also an M112 engine) for 4 years and never had a problem with it.

The 270cdi is a notorious engine for things needing doing on it.

Swirl Flaps will leak and the motor is underneath.
they need to be removed and the spindles blocked.
Half the engine bay has to come out to do this, takes between 12-16 hours if you know what you are doing.

EGR gets bunged up, not really an issue take it off, clean it up and then put it back but bypass it.

Cats are starting to block on them, you can decat it and it will still passes MOT.

Injectors. The copper seals wear and they start to leak, coast around £75 an injector to take out, clean up and refit new washes and bolts.

MAF. These go quite often, but are only £75 from Mercedes.

I had the 270cdi in my ML, my father in law has a garage so I get it all done for free (almost) but I wouldn't buy one if you can't do the above yourself.
I used to get around 28mph average from my ML270, in my E320 petrol Estate I used to average the same. On a run the ML would see 32, the E320 estate would see 36mpg.
My old man had a W211 e270 when they came out, he used to see 35 average and 40 on a run.

Just isn't enough in it to justify buying the diesel imho, plus the E320 is a glorious engine, where as the 270 is pretty agricultural and not very Mercedes like imho.

I had a CLK270cdi, I sold it with 142k on the clock, in that time I the only thing that failed was the Alternator, I did have the engine Terra cleaned when I picked the car up.

It had 62k on the clock when I bought it, I had it mapped & fitted a bigger intercooler as well as Penske Coilovers with no DPF to worry about I found it averaged 31-33mpg on the commute from Kent into Central London, on a run to Manchester & back I'd always get between 46-49mpg (I tend to sit around 80mph) depending on if I was using Ultimate or regular diesel.

I now have a CLK320cdi with the same upgrades, which so far has been fine the fuel figures are slightly better on the Motorway run 49-51mpg but 26-29mpg around town.

As for getting a 320 I'd take a close look at the 500, 27mpg average for the 320 vs 24mpg average for the 500 & they've got a V8 what's not to like.
