Lets say for instance that you know someones full name and date of birth, you're pretty sure they're not telling the whole truth about their past and rumours suggest that a short prison stretch might have occured but you don't know what for. So by harnessing the power of the tinternet how can I dig up more info on them? I've tried google and friends reunited but after that thats me pretty stuck, any ideas ?

Depends where you live, unfortunately the UK is one of the worst as we have the "Data Protection Act" which basically prevents you from find out most stuff about someone.....unless you have a friendly police poerson who can search the PNC for details.

I take it you wish to do this surreptitiously?

If not i.e. in the case of say a prospective employee you can get them to authorise a CRB check. This will return their criminal past for about £35

All you need do then is ask to see it...

I've been trying a similar thing. I know someone who's gone down for 5 years but don't know what for!

If things can't be done through official channels, then i'd be tempted to use the information you already have to find out previous addresses and places of employment. Get in touch with former employers, get names of former collegues and ask them to confirm details of his/her past to the best of their knowledge.
It might take a day but you can very quickly get lots of information about a persons past. You just have to have the neck to bluff/blag information out of people. I was owed money by a guy who dropped off the face of the planet, he got divorced, changed jobs and address. Various phone calls and a number of outrageous lies (hello i'm calling from the inland revenue/CSA etc etc.) got me his current address.

For a small subscription you can use 192.com to potentially find an address or you can also nip along to the town hall and view the electoral roll.

Have you tried searching the online bits of local newspapers? That is less likely if the suspected event was a while ago.

If you can narrow it down to when and where you suspect sentence was passed you may be able to have a look at court records as to who was on down for hearings etc.... Might need to use FOI act for this, I'm not sure.

It may be tricky as by the sound of it they are trying to cover their tracks. Might be worth paying a private dick to have a nose around and be done with it?

The library might be a good place to start - they have microfiche records of local newspapers etc.
A name and (age) d.o.b might have been stored as a story...or the name with stories associatiated with it.

Lets assume this person works for you, and does a really good job.

Maybe in the past they committed a crime for which the have done the time, and been rehabilitated, I thought that after a certain amount of time a conviction was considered spent and didn't have to be declared.

What purpose does digging up this persons past serve?

If they have been put inside for 5 years you know all you need to know... they are not worth knowing

A mate's dad. Seemed like a decent bloke if not slightly worrying! Certainly not the type of bloke I'd try and cross though.

I'm not sure of the technicalities (or how to spell that) but there's something like "the rehabilitation of offenders act" which means that after so many years they don't have to tell you anyway. (and indeed, even if you know you can't take it into account)

You could let them in on your plan to blag the local Natwest & see if they volunteer to drive the getaway car.

What a load of Bollox. A good mate of mine got sent down for 5 years despite pleading innocent and having an solid watertight alibi. Turns out that the evidence was very iffy and the witness was very dodgy. He got off on appeal and rightly so. OK, so he's a bit of a scallywag but still a nice bloke and would do anything for a mate or his family.

My cousin did some time in Holloway for arson, she was later diagnosed with a rare hormone imbalance which caused her to behave in this way, she is now a respected author and had been allowed to leave her past behind her.

On the otherhand I know a particularly nasty piece of work who has come to trial and avoided conviction, and is allowed to carry on committing his particular breed of crime. He has no criminal record and is without a doubt a danger to others but can move freely and unnoticed.
