How is the ride in a Disco II on bumpy roads?

Do the big high profile tyres absorb all the bumps?

Not in my experience no. It's a bit unfair as mine is on aftermarket shocks but I think the suspension is a bit firm. It drives much better when there's some weight in the back.

A previous owner fitted the shocks so I don't know if they're OEM or a bit stiffer.

I had the standard air bag set up on a couple of V8 ES's and found it very compliant. Also, if it has ACE, it'll go round corners like an Elise. Not quite but you get my drift.

What are you comparing it to?

Mine's on airbags and has ace and it's surprisingly good, but you know it's on solid axles.

Comparing to my 1982 BMW E28 520i which is a veritable magic carpet!

Mine was never great. It had ACE, was converted to coils and ran 16 inch wheels. It went round corners ok (thank the ACE for that), and to be fair the ride only became fidgety/crashy over sharp intrusions or lumps across an entire lane where the solid axles really struggle.

My D2 was better at cornering and ride than my Discovery 1, but strangely my Range Rover Classic rides better than the D2 did. Considering they both have similar setups I find that strange! smile

I've had a D2 with air bags and ACE, my current D2 has been converted to coils with no ACE. To be honest I don't notice much difference.
Overall I have no issues with the ride. As others have mentioned the slid axels can make lateral bumps a bit jolting but nothing serious.

I had a disco 2 with air suspension and ace, it handled well for its size and ride was smooth, I would choose one with air suspension over coils any day of the week. I sold mine because of build quality and poor ergonomics in the cabin.

if you need it for off road, check the transfer box as the early models have the transfer box with low range gubbins installed which just needs a lever kit to enable use, then they removed them in the mid year range then the late years it was an optional extra but I'm not sure if all the late spec disco 2s without the optional extra still have the internal lo range gubbins.

They all came with lo-range... You're thinking of the diff-lock lever.
