I'm going away this coming weekend and have been given the job of buying some champagne, this is going to be a weekend of the romantic kind also. I don't want to spend a fortune as I am not over keen on the stuff, but would appreciate some advice on what to buy.
Thanks in advance!

Hiya

What does 'not a fortune' look like to you?

Does it need to be a 'name'?

There was mention of a bollinger on special offer at Asda this weekend. I'll dig up the thread.

Veuve Gold Label, Mumms, Moet, Bollinger Special Cuvee (or even the Grande Annee from the other thread) are all NV (except the GA) Champagnes that are acceptable lower price (About $60US, don't know about UK. Of those listed, I would say the Bollinger - but that's just me.

Moving up a notch would be Dom Perignon ('96 is not bad), PJ Fleur, Taittinger Comtes ('95 for this one) and Veuve Grande Dame. These are all around $129US. The Dom if it's for me please.

For the very special, try Bollinger RD (1985). This will set you back about $300US or so.

Also forgot to mention LR Cristal at the medium price - but I don't particularly care for it...

We tested the first bottle of our Asda Bollinger 96 tonight and it was VERY nice, we're trying to stay away from a second bottle!!!

Adsa have some on special offer just short of £9 per bottle, no idea how good as I haven't tried it yet.

We bought some of this as well, 8 quid something and thought it was very nice as well, it compared well with Tesco's own brand stuff which is always very drinkable. Having said that none of it compares to the Bollinger Grand Annee!

Edited to add, further to ErnestM's advice, IIRC ASDA also had Veuve Grande Dame at something like £45 which I think is a good price.

Enjoy!

I din't realise ASDA were doing the deal - MY advice - BUY it, infact - BUY it ALL at that price, normall retails at round £45 in ASDA (I'v ehad it several times) and it is, personally, the best for the money.

However, it does come down to personal preferance, my fiance doesnt care much for it and preferes the 95 or even the 96 Moet - the 96 is crap in my oppinion. Now at £23 for the Bolly you will not beat it if you like it, however as I say it does has that certain Bollinger taste and you can quite taste liek an oaky taste. Which I like, but not to everyones taste.

However for 70-80 you can get a nice bottle of Dom Perrignon, which both me and the fiance agree on is the way to go when we fancy a little something extra.

What I'm trying to say is even at £45 the Bollinger is in my oppinion 4 times as good as it's Moet counterpart and well worht the money, so it would be a no brainer for me! However if you really want to play it safe and have a loveley champers that I'm sure you'll both enjoy you can't go far wrong with our mate Dom (Not Domster I hasten to add!!)

This of course is all for Supermarket shopping (Tesco usually stock the Dom), on line you can get some amzing stuff but it starts to get really daft!

Cheers,

JC

Gangsta!!!!

Over-priced but still exceptional bubbly. Usually only drunk to be able to say that you're drinking Cristal.

If you're not into drinking champagne or sparkling wine...then I see very little merit in you spending a reasonable sum of money.
I've had no end of young, dissapointed, lads come back to me after their 18th b.day party and say it tasted like cider.
I love champagne...and think Krug is the best. BUT
If you're not into it...then just have something you enjoy instead
