Does anybody know how loud an AJP engined Tuscan Racer is (fitted with a works race engine, original exhaust system etc).

Thanks.
Darren.

Dunno but would have thought they would be higher than that.

my griff runs similar spec (exhaust wise) and a clear pipe hits 128db!!!

standard packing gets 110-112

full silencing is about 108!

(thats pre-challenge engine but i'm upping the packing again to reduce, so i can get on more tracks!)

i expect

standard 115.
full 105.

Tuscans run silmilar spec. loud days only

Guillotine , Chim 500 with precats removed and "sports" exhaust regularly noise tests at around 100 dB running on Optimax/octane booster.
(im a bit economical with the revs though )

yeah, mine did the same.

we have our own calibrated noise meter so i'm pretty sure of readings (area etc has an effect)

mine has full de-cat,
long JP headers
no baffling

= 128db
(actually thats max on meter so could be higher)

tail silencers + additional tail "cans" = 108db.

its abit too loud now for tracks etc hence new system with challenge engine.

on the day checks vary wildly and mine levels pretty close to tuscans.
but RR would know!

The 103/105, mainly the latter, was the standard pre race check. Some were higher, around 107/8 and they would let them through with a "Get it sorted" This was a standing test at 4500rpm, but we all stopped at 4000 as we knew that things got a bit louder above that

We used normal unleaded, nothing special, used to get about 3 miles to the gallon well, near enough

Don't mean to play the clever guy, but just for the little note : when you count in pressure (dB SPL), +6dB = volume multiplied by 2
So, if you take the almost standard Griff at 98dB, 128dB for your Griff means it would be 32 times louder !!!!!!!!!!

I've read about your experience, Guillotine, so I know you're serious, but was the measure done really at 1 meter ? or was your device really accurate ?
128dB sounds possible for a road car only if there was some detonation...

After having thought about it for a while, there is another possiblity, but it seems almost impossible because I assume that all the normal Tivs reach their maximum output [98dB(A)] between 1000Hz and 5000Hz, which seems logical...
So, the possibility would be that all standard Tivs produce actually insane amounts of bass below 200Hz (and so, reach their peak of 98dB(A) in that frequency range), and that your Griff produces a special resonnance between 1000Hz and 5000Hz (and reaches her peak of 128dB(A) in that frequency range) ; this would indicate that there would not be a real difference of 30dB SPL, because of the curve of the "filter A" (which is normally used for measurements)
but again, this explanation is rather unlikely to reflect reality......

I agree with Rod - the race cars were not that noisy. Around 105 was the norm. Depended largely on the age and condition of the exhaust packing.

Unsilenced they are rather spectacular - my silencer became detached from the pipes at Knockhill - nearly deafened me after 3 laps.

Most people use Optimax. Those with bigger budgets (or just the plain lazy) had 76 Racing fuel delivered to the awning - 100 octane, and those who owned the company and made their own rules had 102 (or was it 105?) octane 76 Racing jungle juice. Entirely understandable - if you're running a 5 litre engine when everyone else is on a 4.5, you're going to need better fuel - especially if you've got to turn those extra wide GT spec wheels

Sorry to hijack, but does anyone remember how great a pack of the old Rover V8-engined cars sounded on a warm-up lap?

And those yellow-rimmed wheels.

Nice.

Alster,

calibrated meter 0.5m.

meter max 120db and flat out peak.

the 128 is actually on over-run and is therefore the max. at 4,500, lift of completely and there is a HUGE roar on lift! around double the static figure at 4500 at 118.

ofcourse, i lift of very gingerly on noise tests.

have been warned on European GP's for noise.
Le Mans, dijon A1 etc.

as i say its abit tooo noisey really and i usually run around 115db on the road.

With the ex Cerb 4.2 engine that is in there now but with the race exhaust, Castle Combe measured it @ just 100 last June.
