Now, that's what I call a knackered vxr8 engine.....
Other than the cam/lifters and broken tensioner, looks mostly ok on the other photos.

Was it an original or uprated cam and lifters ?

And broken tensioners arent that unusual. The notion of a tensioner in there like that is good, but not when they arent totally reliable. Just revert back to the old black dampener as they call it bolted in between the two gears.

I certainly wouldn't go as far as to say it's destroyed.

I will add more pictures. The steel tensioner pin knocked out, and went through the engine scoring ,marking and damaging everything in its wake.

The engine sounded like a early diesel peugeot 505, and rattled like a skeleton having a w..k in a biscuit tin...

The broken bit would most likely just have fallen into the sump same as the tip of the plastic tensioner has done.

Certainly the picture of the oil pump shows nothing of any size has passed through it, and chances of a pin making it then through the oil pump and then galleries and then filter is pretty much zero.

The noise will definitely have been the lifters/cam though.

As to why the lifters failed, is another matter, certainly the crankshaft looks fine so oil supply should be ok.
