Doing my nut in - Correct Tyre Sizes

I've been reading loads of threads on tyre sizes and can't seem to work out what the correct - from the factory - tyre size should be.
I've even downloaded the Excel sheet off of Steve's website and still can't work out what I should have.
This has all been started by me needing new rears.
I believe that the rears are the wrong size. I have 225/55ZR16's.
I have a 1996 4.0HC with PAS. What are the correct sizes front and rear.
Can't think off the top of my head but I think the fronts are the wrong size as well... Think 215/50ZR15's but will be looking later as tucked away in the garage today.

Cheers for that.... 450 on thier site comes up with the tyre sizes you quote above. Just out of interest do you know (or anyone else) if the 500 has different width wheels as they have 225/50/15 and 245/45/16. I read somewhere that 245 need 8" wheels and think the 4.0 has 7". Anyone no the answer to this one??

225 50 and 245 45s fitted on my std Chimaera 4.0l wheels. No problems at all.

I've just got some new Toyos on the rear (replacing the Toyos which were on the car when I bought it), and found the back end felt rather unsettled for quite some time. After looking around PH and based on my own experience, I'd advise you to take it very easy for the first 100 miles (particularly if conditions are wet and cold), then still take care for the next 150 miles (yes, really!) - best to have a few 'enthusiastic' excursions on dry roads (if you can find them!) of 20 miles or so, letting them cool down to 'cure' them. After this bedding-in period, they'll be great.

The tyre sizes have changed about 10 times through the production and it does depend on whether the car has PAS. To be honest this does make saying there is a definitive tyre size a bit difficult which is why you are seeing all the variations. Part of the problem is also that some sizes are no longer available in a good brand which makes life a bit interesting.

Ive been running on Toyo's for just under a year now in the North West where wet roads are a way of life 
. 225 all round on a 4L Chimaera. This car gets driven every week. No problems running the tyres in - I always run tyres in carefully - besides there is always a learning curve changing brands. They felt slightly odd at first - couldn't quite pin it down - upping the pressures to 25 - 25.5 lbs made them feel 'better'. Excellent wet weather tyre, progressive/predicable both wet and dry. Would buy again. My 2ps worth. Cheers Jeff

My car has 225/55/16 and 205/60/15 fitted at present. Everything I read suggests that these should be 225/50/16 and 205/55/15 including some TVR main dealer webistes (all be it for a 450). I read your tyre size Excel file and saw that it makes a difference to the rolling radius. Do I read it right that a 225/50/16 is not the right size as there is not a 0 under the approriate colum? And that a 225/45/16 is the correct size as there is a 0% difference??

The Chimp was designed as a softer and more comfortable and practical version of the Griff. Do you like the way that the car is at the moment? If so then stick your present (original) sizes. If you want to use UHP rubber then you'll need to switch to a 205/55 or 225/50 series tyre at the front and it's usual to match the rear to this by a 225/50 and a 245/45 at the rear. Front wheels are 7" rims; rear were specced at 7.5" for the 225s (slightly narrow even for them) 9" rim would be good for the 245s. IMHO the best answer for you depends upon which characteristics of the car are the most important to you.
The 0 means it is a perfect match. The spread sheet has the ability for you to define a target and then it will calculate differences. Another factor is that as the tyres changed so did the speedos and so the speedo error is a bit difficult to predict. However as the speedos are rarely that accurate 1 to 2 percent difference is not going to make that much difference especially as the tyre diameter decreases with wear and changes with centrifugal force.

I went for Goodyear F1 GSD3's 225/50/16. Initial view is the tyres are better than the GSD2's, which I kind of assumed they would be but you never know.
They look better being the lower profile and, as a word of warning, I think the old tyres were rubbing against the wheel arch. I used to get a pronouced bump noise from the rear and this has gone. Also there is signs that the underseal has been rubbed off and the guy fitting the tyres said it looked liike they were rubbing. Will know more in a few drives time whether the bump noise has gone.
The only porblem, there always has to be one, is that the fronts now look a little odd as they are 5% up on the profile... Have a feeling I will be replacing these sooner rather than later.

Only one mention of tyre pressures! I'm boring and tend to use an 'R'reg Chimeara for touring - currently shod with Potenza's all round - any advice on best pressures for comfort, reduced road noise (all the better to hear the exhaust note!!) and low wear????!!Cheers
Handbook says 24 for 225/50/16 but tyre guy thought that was low but went by what the manual said.... Stand to be corrected on this one.
