Hi All,

Just put a deposit down on a car this evening, did an HPI check and it shows a mileage discrepancy. The car is currently on 78,800 miles. A screenshot is below. My feeling is that the slight discrepancy in 2007 might be causing the alert. Could you please advise further?

March 2007 mileage is from the DVLA where you can, optionally, put the mileage on the V5 when you sell a car.

Seller was unsure of exact mileage but knew it was roughly 18,000.

Wouldn't worry about it.

Sold by BMW bike. The buyer did an HPI check and then emailed me to say that there was a discrepancy.

At the 11th hour I got the HPI people to change their records by sending through services records etc. Turned out that some duppy MOT tester made a typo

So definitely worth giving the other party a chance to check things. There are somre thick lazy don't give a stuff type peeps out there that don't give a stuff whether it affects resale or value.

To be honest the discrepency is few hundred miles a few days apart and the 18000 is such a nice round figure it certainly wouldn't bother me...but I would get it changed in the future just to save the ball ache.

Nothing to worry about just someone using round numbers.

So in the course of three days, nearly a decade ago, there were three entries made...

19/3 - 17900. 19/3 - 18000. 22/3 - 17877

Pause for two seconds and apply Occam's Razor to it. Do you think that is even remotely likely to be a genuine discrepancy, or just somebody being a bit slapdash?

"Oi, Dave... What's the mileage on that... <insert vague description>"
"<peers in window> It's about 18k, Trev."
"Ta. <scribble>"

Nothing to worry about, but good grounds to use to negotiate a discount.

I would laugh if someone tried to use such a thing to gain a discount on a car I was selling. It is from 8 years ago and is hardly worth even mentioning- why would someone adjust the mileage to that extent within a few days? Surely the most beneficial thing to do, in the spirit of fraud, is to slash off thousands of miles!

OP- check the miles on past MOTs. That will give you another perspective.

Which is why it states on the certificate to check that all the details are correct.

what does NMR stand for and when would mileage be entered udner that heading

and when would DVLA isnert a number? when the car is sold? i.e as suggested someone has guessed 18k when sellign the car. i presume it had a MOT shrotly after which is where the correct mileage was entered.

National Mileage register.

Could have been mileage entered on an HPI check or similar.

The discrepancies happen over 4 days.

- Likely when someone's had the car up for sale and a few people HPI'd it.

Wouldn't bother me at all!
