Hi .. am a newbie,

Friend in the Porsche forum suggested I join.

I have bought a 2012 Audi A4 Avant S Line Quattro TFSI Automatic that I now have had for 2 weeks. I've had a country drive of 550 Miles and several in town drives and appear to be getting 24MPG Motorway and 17MPG in town.. !! not the 40MPG average I've been told.

Before I pay Audi to check this for me. What might I be aware of.. seems the log book is solid and regularly serviced and the car is in immaculate condition.
57000 Miles current. Engine looks new! Seems to run well and I'm driving sensibly ..

Can someone give me a heads up please on what it might be please..

thank you Bill

I don't think there is much wrong unfortunately! I haven't owned a 2.0 tfsi but do have the 3.0 S4 and read quite a lot of comments in various forums that said there was very little real world difference between the two models. Certainly looks to be the case as I'm getting around the same.

It doesn't sound far off, thirsty beasties. They don't get full performance or economy unless you put in high octane fuel. Never believe brochure figures.

That 40MPG extra urban has been measured on an artifical cycle..

Try driving at 56MPH steadily and see what you get, try 30MPH as well - thats the sort of speeds the tests use, Not using the loud pedal to get you up to 70-80 leptons, and definately not spirited driving on country roads.

I'm feeling lucky with my v60 polestar (3.0 Turbo AWD auto) - it will see around 33MPG on a long run at 75mph, enjoyable driving however is a different matter...

24MPG motorway is definitely *very* poor: I ran a manual '09 2.0TFSI A4 Avant Quattro for about 50K miles, mostly (quite hilly) rural A/B roads. Overall consumption was around 30-31MPG. On motorway runs, 35 was easily achievable if you restrain yourself to sensible speeds.

S4 MPG is most definitely not 'almost the same'. I'm now driving a '15 S4 Avant, and on the same mix of roads/driving I'm getting 25-26MPG, which is about what I'd reckoned.

Excessive oil consumption is a much more common problem with the 2.0TFSI...

You driving it hard?

I have a 2006 2.0T S-Line Avant, but FWD, however, it never drops below 31mpg average and I see around 35mpg on a fast 100mph run in Germany and 38mpg sat at 75mph.
Sit at a constant 70mph and it will break the 40mpg barrier, just!

If I put in 95 ron it drops quite considerably, more than any car I have had before, around 15% mpg wise.

Quattro will knock around 15% off I would guess, but would expect you to still get 30mpg on a run even on 95ron.

Wow! Thanks for the reply's..

So I'm to gather by this that yes while my MPG is very low, don't expect to get much more... Ouch! Like DrMark said..

Well I'll just have Audi look at it and decide ..

Thanks again

Is it getting up to temp properly?

It should get to 89ºc within a minute or two and stay there, no move no matter what you are doing.

If it is not getting to temperature and is sitting at 80ºc or even lower, you will be overfuelling.

My thermostat has started sticking and I have seen a massive drop in MPG, rather than the 38 sitting at 75mph it is now down to around 32mpg.
I am going to put a new one in tomorrow.

a broken thermostat would give a lower mpg. i wouldn't trust Audi i would get live logs checked by someone in the know.

Have a check if air filter too. Often gets 'missed' on servicing.

And welcome.

P.s small gripe about the VW emissions bashing, all the blooming buggers do it,the whole MPG thing is a fix.

As an average mpg that seems pretty poor. We get 26mpg out of the 6 cyl 3l outback which is probably older tech than the Aufi, and I have to cane the 3.5lire Ebora pretty hard to get an average for a trip below 28mpg and havd seen 41mpg on s long motorway journey.

Couple of factors to consider apart from what has already been said.
Time of year - these engines (like S4 as well) dont like cold temps and both my S4 and Leon FR 2.0 TFSI had considerably lower mpg during colder months.
Permanent Quattro - this increases consumption in a real life. Notice how it rolls in gear less freely than FWD cars.

We ran a B7 2.0T Quattro Tip a few years ago. Averaged around 26mpg overall. Occasionally broke the 30mpg on a motorway run! To be fair, the quoted was 29/30 mixed.

I'd also check your tyre pressures.

I have B8 3.2fsi quattro A4 manual

It manages 35-36 on the motorway at 80ish average and around town about 25-28mpg.

This is with the tyres set to max pressure and running 95 ron fuel.

Previously I had a B7 2.0TFSI quattro A4 220 bhp and that returned about the same as the 3.2, maybe a few mpg better on the motorway.

Two other points : are your figures from the trip computer, or just based on fuel receipts? And, is your car running standard size wheels and tyres?

Hi SilentBrown,

mainly from topping up fuel then zeroing the trip meter.. this I've done 4 times now. then taking the mileage and petrol in litres and entering it here http://www.mpg-calculator.co.uk followed up by simple calculation of 4.5 litres to 1 imperial gallon..

mine has the 19" wheels and Continental Sport Contact 3
Tyre Size 255/35Y19
