I bought a car lift today

I should have it in 2-3 weeks, no more rolling around on the garage floor - can't wait

I'm jealous. My garage is on a slope - makes things even worse.

Aiming for one of these eventually...

OK guys - everyone round Brett's and don't forget to bring your sump plug spanner and oil filter. Brett will supply the oil and coffee.

Not sure if it will take your truck, but one of these would

or there's this one

I was going to dig a pit this year (like I was last year) but had also toyed with the idea of a 4-post lift. Though there are some drawbacks with the 4-post lift. The main one for me is height, or lack of it. My garage ceiling is not high enough to take full advantage from a 4-post lift. Another drawback is the fact that they lift at the wheels, in effect keeping them on the ground (that’s where a 2 post lift would be nice but they are bigger and more dosh). Another annoyance I would have had with a 4-post lift in the garage is that it would always be there, often in the way. While working on other things in the garage I can park the vette right over to one side giving me more room and keeping the vette further from harms way, if I had a 4 post lift in the garage then the vette would have to be parked there and there only.

There are also drawbacks with a pit, these I have experienced first hand as I have often used my mates for work on various cars. They get dirty, you get fed up of climbing in and out of them and the main draw back is that on a car the size of the vette it would be difficult to have a pit long enough in the garage (with room for spare so you can climb in and out) to work on both ends of the car in one go.

The lift I have ordered lifts 2000kg to a height of just over 1.2 meters. The distance between the roof of the vette and the garage ceiling is just over 1.2 meters. The lift will lift leaving the wheels free, the only drawback is that the lift sits under the car (gearbox area). Most of the time this would not be a problem but there’s no point having a lift if you can’t get to the gearbox (or that’s what I said to Kerensa anyway), so I have also ordered a set of 4 giant axle stands that go higher than 1.2m. That will make it possible to lift the car and then lower and remove the lift. The lift is ‘portable’ or as portable as 265kgs can be.

The lift is due in 2-3 weeks. I have said for now that I will take delivery from the lorry although they say it’s a 4-man lift from flat bed lorry height. They suggest either collecting on a trailer as its lower and the lift can then be slid off the trailer straight on to the garage floor. The other option is to lorry it to a site with a forklift and then trailer it home from there. I don’t have a trailer and I don’t have a tow bar on the vette. If anyone has any suggestions please give me a shout.

An engine hoist might do the trick if somebody has one.

Oh yeah, I got it from these people

Does the lift come in one piece or as a kit of parts ? When I had an 85Kg printer delivered the lorry driver just dumped it at the side of the road and let me get on with it ! () Luckily it wasn't raining, but I had to break it down into parts in the road and take each piece into my house - had to ask a neigbour for help with the big bit.

Maybe you can unbolt the big bits so that only two people are needed to move it ? Providing the lorry driver is willing to hang around for long enough...
