That is to fit 52/36 chainrings. Went out for my first bike ride today for nearly 3 weeks and it just felt right. I did wonder if I'd notice the difference and honestly I'd say no on the hills I passed over today. Maybe going over the Lecht or similar braes and I might be wishing for the 50/34 again ;-)

Likewise but I so put a sensible sized rear cassette on depending on how steep the terrain gets.

interesting. i moved over to a CX 46/36 and will now never consider anything else. i can only think of 2 occasions i spun out each time for no more than 20 seconds and the benefits for me with an 11/cassette far outweigh this 40 seconds of inconvenience!

Surely the mid-gear ratios that you use in most normal riding won't have been affected that much?

I ride a road bike with a 50T and a cyclocross bike with a 48T big ring (similar cassettes, from memory) and I can't say that there is much difference, other than having to shift up at slightly lower speed on the cyclocross bike.

When I ride in hilly areas I use the full range on the road bike, and can top 40mph on 50:13

"Top 40 mph"? That's just getting started! I have a 52-36 with an 11-28 cassette and think it is spot on for me round here (Sussex/Surrey) mainly. Might go for a 30 or 32 if I get into the Fred though! Friends with compacts seem to run out of gears on most downhills.

I've an entry into next years Fred and I'll revert to the 50/34 or a different rear cassette. I've a 11-28 fitted just now but after this years Fred I am pretty sure I will struggle on Hardknott again. For most parts it'd be fine but Hardknott is a different kettle of fish altogther!

An entry onto Fred? It doesn't open for applications till December or January.

I had to push on Hardknot with a 34/30.

I had emptied the tank till then though. I'll be trying for a place next year.

Steve, I did this years Fred for charity, if you raised over a certain amount, the G&T's stop me remembering how much it is, they give you an entry into next years Fred.

I thought I felt not bad till that point but once the 2nd part of Hardknott kicked in I realised I wasn't that good... Can't wait for May 2016 :-D

I can't imagine what Hardknott is like - it's 90 miles in, isn't it?

Yeah it's round about that distance. It's the hardest hill I've tried to pedal up. It was my lower back that was killing me at the time, thought it'd be my legs but no.

I cramped up on Hardknot. It broke me.

Did you have to walk it? There was plenty others walking it and on Wrynose as well.

Fair enough, it's personal preference, but a 52 is only 4% larger than a 50 chainring. 100 Rev/min on the 52 will produce the same speed as 104rev/min on the 50.

A ride around the Peak hitting mid 40's mph a few times isn't really hindered by a compact chainset.

I once did 60mph in The Lakes on a borrowed bike -it was in the mid 90s so probably had a 53 on the front.

I got off, let the cramp ease and then got on again. Cramped and got off for a bit and then got on again!

I managed to ride Wrynose thoughbiggrin

Chapeau Steve, I walked it :-( But I think the lack of proper miles didn't help me, I'd only been home for a few days and the previous month all I could do was 1hr or so on a stationary bike. Next time my rota lands better so no excuses/reasons to fail!

I have "bottled" entering the Fred ballot previously. I think I will this year, a few friends have done it before in six and a half hours; we did some riding in Yorkshire this year and they reckon I would do it.

It's in the top five sportives and I need to do Hardknot so why not as part of 112 miles.

I could always swap the 36 for a 30!

Meh 53/42 on mine biggrin

I will accept 53/39 though as a second choice.

Anyone running 50/34 should maybe consider getting a bell and handlebar streamers since they want to be a child about it wink

I have a 50/36, with a 12-26 on the back. I wouldn't mind something just a fraction lower, so it's either switch to a 34 on the front or change the cassette. Problem with that is it's only an 8 speed, and the only 28T cassette available is 11-28 so I'd pay with more widely spaced ratios.

Probably easiest to MTFU until I can afford a new bike with 10 or 11 speed...

I had a 9 speed Campag setup on my old bike, and you do run out of choices as groupies age.
So the Fred is only top 5? What are the others?
