References on request

I can't see any real issue with not putting references on a CV but saying they are available on request.

Anyone think there's anything wrong with it?

You are wasting space on a CV. If the employer wants reference they will ask you.

I've seen CVs with names and addresses of referees on and ones that just say 'References available upon request'; both are unnecessary. The main reason is that references will only usually be asked for after one has been successful at interview, not prior.

And that's why I raised the question. Some time ago a potential employer contacted my existing employer for a reference before I had accepted their offer. I declined the offer and it created a very awkward situation for me for several months.
