I'm currently negotiating with a private seller over the purchase of the above. The people who look after the car currently ( Porsche Indy ), vouch for him as a genuine guy who loves the car, and describe the car in glowing terms.

I'm generally happy to go ahead, my only concern being that when I HPI'd it, it was described as a 1999 to 2005 Boxster 3.2 Anniversary, with a correspondingly low value. I'm assuming this description related to the previous 986 model, and wonder why it should show up as this? Other than plate changes, which they all seem to have had, no other issues.

Anyone shed any light on it?

I would want to ensure that the personalised plate hasn't been put on recently to mask outstanding finance or insurance history, so I'd call HPI with the VIN number and double check against that. And if you do go ahead and buy it you want HPI to update their record for it really as they haven't got the latest info for that number plate smile

Ah, do you think it's as simple as the plate having been on a 986 previously, and HPI haven't got around to catching up? The current owner has had the car for around a year, and the plate went on around the time he purchased it. There are no alerts on HPI other than the plate changes.

There's no such thing as a 1999-2005 anniversary (the clue's in the name) as far as I know.
Check the vin with hpi and decode the vin online to check it is 987 3.2.
It's probably either the way the dvla have recorded the model, or possibly hpi if they use their own data.

Cheers, I rang HPI yesterday, they were more concerned that I ask the person who did the check for me to contact them so that they could update their records, than they were with there being any issue with the car itself. Not too worried, everything else checks out.

Cheers for that.....I bought it today, the car seems ok generally, and it's had a fair bit spent on it, the previous owner seems pretty diligent. It drove well on the test drive, but unfortunately, due to extended roadworks near the sellers home, the opportunity to drive it at motorway speeds couldn't occur. 1st time on the way home I managed to get decent speed up, there's a whine from the left rear above 80, which is apparent when on the throttle, but not there on lift off. Need more driving time to be more specific, but it's pretty noticeable, and sounds like diff whine. Not entirely convinced it isn't something wind noise related at the mo.

Update, been in to JMG Porsche this morning, seems like a normal noise to them, so just me panicking!

They also performed their free " new customer " 2 hour long check over the car, very little to be concerned about, so I'm a significantly happier bunny than I was yesterday afternoon.

Porches always sound like a bag of spanners and the whine on my Cayman reminds me of my 1988 MG Metro!

You will get used to it smile

I can see why! Very mechanical sounding car after a long time driving front-engined turbo stuff, there's a lot to listen to, not all of it especially reassuring on first acquaintance! Gone from being almost physically sick at the thought that I'd bought a pup, to almost blasé in about 100 miles.
