Hi all, I need to replace the windscreen in the DB9V. Any recommendations appreciated as I am not really keen on going to Autoglass.

Thanks

No reason not to use one of the big suppliers - they'll have to get the screen from AM I'd guess anyhow, and all they do is install windscreens. You may find your local friendly Indy may supervise for a princely sum. Trinity supervised the fitting of armourfend to my V8.

My screen was done by autoglass. Glass was AM glass, they took three attempts as they didn't have the correct bits (there are some sacrificial connectors on the trim as I understand it - plastic xmas tree type things) but stopped before they started if that makes sense so I took the car away.

They have to do it inside and they have now closed all their centres so I think they use the back of a B&Q or something ridiculous. Its also best to leave the car over night to let it set. I would not fancy that in a B&Q The job itself was fine.

I had a dealer do my BMW because autoglass screwed up the order on that one and timed out on an MOT fail so the insurance company agreed BMW could do it. Great... except the windscreen wipers were at the wrong angle and the gap at the top looked a little wider than it was before.

In summary I guess I'd prefer a guy that does it day in day out than a guy that's been trained but does one a month. You just need a guy that cares about his job and loves Astons which is harder to know.

Yeah I used autoglass on my V12, the fitter was a nice guy, very careful and had done 4/5 Aston's before. Lifetime warranty on the work as well. There is a bit of trim that comes out but as I say, he was experienced and helpful.

The Glass is AM only, I phoned a couple of places to confirm but there are no third parties that make it.

Do you generally get a choice of who to use with your insurers though?

I do want my windscreen replaced, and I've seen enough posts from Glassman to know he's the person I'd like to do it! But I assumed my insurers would tell me who was doing it.

A lot of insurers have deals with the likes of Autoglass, so may not permit you to go elsewhere or if they do you'll have to contribute in someway, larger excess for example.

I've heard some right horror stories about Autoglass, they also featured on Watchdog not that long ago. My step father had a bad experience with them also, as an RAC Patrolman. He had to have the screen replaced by them, they were doing it outside his house and the RAC van was stolen whilst they were doing it, (probably left the keys out on show) they denied being in "possession" of the van at the time. It was truly shocking. Probably down to the fact the RAC van with all the tools etc was a good £100k plus loss! This was 10+ years ago now.

I don't know about insurance, was reading the op as "I want a proper job, as I'm paying"
Disclaimer, I've never used Glassman & fingers crossed won't need to, (but he seems to get good feedback on PH.)

When I needed mine replacing on the V12V, it was done under insurance, by my dealer, who charged almost £800 for the screen, plus labour, plus VAT - it was £1,100 all in

I was pretty shocked with the price, although as I say it was done under insurance - is that typical for what the factory charge for a screen ?

I have a lot of pitting on my screen, which all my Astons seem to have suffered with - in the wrong (/right) light, you can see what looks like spots of rain all over the screen, which in fact are very small chips

Dave what the hell were you doing posting this at that time whilst on a Scotland Hoon!
Like others have said Glassman if you are paying
Tough call on the bigger ones via insurance, the glass comes from AM but its all down to the fitter
I've just had the Honda done and the guy was very very careful and tidy

Can't comment re Aston as we've never needed a replacement (touch wood!) however that price is pretty much in line with the screen on my CL63, which cost £1,067 all in, fitted by a specialist via our usually main dealer. That includes removal of a lot of trim and the mass of complicated stuff mounted to the screen (night vision, wiper sensors, etc).

Screen was only available from Mercedes and I didn't feel confident the generic fitters would be up to speed with the removal and fitting of all the ancillary stuff (which they admitted to themselves over the phone!)

Ended up in a bun fight with Admiral over it but we won via the Ombudsman, but that's a whole different story!

Interesting to hear the Merc price (the Aston has a little less going on e.g. no night vision but still suffers from some of the same issues). I suspect control of the supply is one of the big reasons why price is so high

Also interesting to hear about other people's experience re insurance. There are a lot of threads on here about insurance, at vastly differing costs. I'm with Locktons and there is no doubt, claims experience is where you really seem to notice the difference

I emailed them and they let me instruct my dealer and I could either send them the bill or pay & reclaim - no need to fill in a form or hassle over who I used. They paid within 48 hours of receiving the bill. There was a £50 windscreen excess and no effect on future premiums

My BMW was a about a grand - Head up display, cameras, sensors, you name it. But then the Aston has 3 to 4 aerials depending on model and each of those needs care and attention.
