Hi All

If someone had £30k to invest and was happy to wait for a couple of years, what would PH recommend it be invested in?

I have no experience of this outside of bank accounts so any laymans advice would be greatly appreciated

TIA

Send me the money and I guarantee to double it for you.

Seriously though, some questions to answer are

How much risk are you prepared to take with it?
What rate of tax do you pay
I assume you are debt free

Rather not take a high risk as not after a quick return

No debts fortunately

"A couple of years" isn't really a decent enough time period to be looking at investments in the traditional sense of the word.

As much as that, though, how suddenly and quickly might access to the money be needed? While it's possible that you might make an investment, and that investment go up in the next two years, if you can't be flexible about getting it back into cash, you might need to sell your investment at a time when it isn't strong, and therefore lose money on it.

For a guaranteed return, the best is a 2-year bond at 2.35% (£705 before tax). Otherwise you're into more risky investments or those with no guarantee of getting anything extra back.

Open one Santander 123....pay all your DDs from it and this will almost certainly cancel out the £5 monthly charge plus 3% interest before tax. Tax rules change next year to give £1000 tax free

Open 2 TSB current accounts paying 5% up to £2000

Open Tesco current or Bank of Scotland or Halifax Current to make up the rest

circulate the minimum payments to and from Santander with Standing orders

I reckon you'll make about 3.2% less tax....but perhaps no tax next year. It needs a bit of effort to start with but 100% risk free

^^ That's the one. Do it in an ISA and you'll be tax free.

You can get around 2% from a cash ISA but there will be restrictions on how quickly you can get at the money, plus you can't invest all £30K at once.

33g is spot on the money with this one! Best low risk solution.

Thought you didn't want any risk? Any stock market based investment is risky.

Just face it - at the moment with interest rates so low it's nigh on impossible to get any decent return without a degree of risk. Nowadays the best thing to do with capital is to clear debts.

Seems a lot of effort if the first few months for 3.2%.

I'd opt for premium bonds and a bit of luck if the OP wants no risk.

Deposit on a Buy-to-Let. If you choose the right part of the country possibly deposit on 2 Buy-to-Lets..

Not always. Often better to have a mix: access to cash in case of a redundancy. You can't always take money out of the equity in the house.
