Last weekend I decided to use my cyclocross bike for it's intended purpose, instead of just a winterbike. So I rocked up at round 5 of the We3lsh cyclocross championship in Brecon. weather was dry and the going firm. There was a great atmosphere with plenty of action for spectators to watch, kids races, juniours novice women, and the senior men/women and vets. Once I was signed on I had a little ride around the course and the technical bits were .... technical! I employed my MTB handling skills and although plenty were getting off, I managed to ride the whole course and I think it was faster than getting off and running some sections.
so 12:30 arrived and I got a good start position in the front half of the 200 strong field. The whistle blew and the 'fun' began. My god it was the hardest 1 hour of my cycling life it think. my ave HR was 180bpm!! it was tough. avoiding crashes, passing people, getting passed, the course was changing every lap as the firm ground gave way under 200 mad cyclists. the quick boys were, well , quick, I got lapped, but out of 200, only 21 finished on the lead lap, I lost 1 lap, so pretty happy as plenty of people lost 2 or even 3 laps.
I finished 53rd overall and 16th Vet. For a first attempt I was very happy. it was great fun and certainly beats a cold road ride or even a winter turbo session. I can highly recommend it, the people were friendly and the racers all seemed to accept that others were going to slip up and hold you up and not get aggravated as chances are, you would be holding somebody else up during a slip up.
bring on round 6 in Camarthen.

Fun isn't it.

Be warned, it's downhill from here, you'll be on a carbon bike with no bottle cage bosses, £100 each tubulars and a skin suit before you know it.

The Three Peaks Cyclocross is the last weekend in September...

That's a great result for a first time.

I'll be doing my 5th event this weekend and will be looking for a top 100 placing.

I settled on £40 each clinchers.....
