As the bank holiday falls on the Saturday, do employers have to legally give staff a day off in lieu?

We don't close between Xmas and NY - but will push for a day off in between if the above is the case.

A bizarre question and in the wrong forum. When bank holiday dates fall on the weekend, the government specifies when the "actual" bank holiday is. You don't get a legal right to choose it.

This year, the Boxing Date substitute bank holiday is the 28th...

Your main legal right in relation to holidays is that, in total over the year, you must receive your statutory leave entitlement: https://www.gov.uk/holiday-entitlement-rights/enti...

Caveat: I am not a lawyer.

Thanks. Although, i'm not sure how it is a bizarre question!

If an admin moves/deletes that would be great.

Thanks again

depends on your contract of employment and how holidays are handled.

By law a full time employee is entitled to 5.6 weeks (28 days) which includes Bank Holidays (so minimum 20 + BH). You negotiate days off whether those are BH or not, you cannot insist (reasonable adjustments excluding) on specific days.

so it boils down to contract, I'd say if BH's are regularly worked you probably don't have much of an option.

Bank holidays are irrelevant now anyway. Since the government changed employment law to 28 days, since we were one of the few European countries letting some employers include the bank holidays in the 4 weeks minimum leave.

But if your employer closes on bank holidays then they will be closed on the Monday following Christmas, as bank holidays are always moved to the following Monday when they fall on the weekend.

I work Mon - Fri and every other Saturday.

We close Bank Holidays apart from one which we are open.

I get 20 days holiday per year + bank holidays.

I wish holidays days were pro-rata against days worked as those Saturdays are basically 5 extra working weeks a year.

In the Netherlands, if xmas day is on the Saturday then no extra days off are give, so finish work on the Friday and back in on Monday.
