I have fitted a T5 from a later Griffith 500 in my 67 TVR Vixen V8 and I need to figure out how to make the mechanical speedo drive work.

The Sierra Cosworth T5 speedo drive adapter is to large so had that turned down to fit the TVR T5, but the drive gear on the speedo cable has too many teeth on it (21 teeth). I need a 19 toothed drive gear to match the bevel gear on the output shaft.

Who do I call for help/assistance?

Or has anyone on here solved this problem?

Hoping to avoid converting to electric speedo due to looks of the dash.

My T5 box was rebuilt by CTS (Competition Transmission Services aka The Gearbox Man) but you could also try Readman Racing - both know the T5 box well.

Thanks. Spoke to CTS and he suggetsed I call Readman Racing after trying to help. Not gotten hold of John yet, but spoke to his better half and got his mobile number so will try again later.

Other suggestions welcome.

Hi Sonus,

Here in California, we had a great shop build us a T-5 trans where he used the Taller low-gear cluster and the Shorter 5th gear. Then to position the shift lever in the right spot in our '71 vixen 2500 (now Ford 5.0) we installed the FORD tailshaft onto the rest of a basic GM/metric trans. This left us Out-to-Lunch on any kind of mechanical speedo drive. After searching the options, we chose to go with a VDO speedo (and all the rest of the gauges) with a GPS receiving module. The data states a 200K sample frequency which I calculated was about every 3-inches at 60 miles per hour. "Sorry officer, My speedo must be OFF" won't work anymore!

This was a certainly an easy solution for us, I hope it might help you. Here is an ebay posting for the part:

Cheers,
Terry

Thanks Royaledriver.

Does the GPS speedo work in tunnels? We've got a few of them here in Norway smile
I've also sent a message to Readman Racing and spoken to Competition Tranmission Services. CTS suggested a Ford Mustang speedo cable might work, but Readman racing has confirmed it won't. He has one speedo drive that fits, but it has been put aside for another customer. I've asked to be contacted if it doesn't sell.

Sonus,

Several years ago I bought a used T5 box which had a speedo drive (let's call it box A), I swapped that box with the one that was in my Griffith (call it box B) and transferred the speedo drive to box B as I didn't need it in the Griffith. Earlier this year I sold box B to someone on PH who fitted it to his Cerbera, I don't think he would have needed the speedo drive. I'll see if I still have his contact details and if I do I'll ask him whether he still has the speedo drive.

Andrew.

I've emailed the person to whom I sold the gearbox with speedo drive. I'll let you know what he says, if he replies.

I do indeed have Andrew's old box in my Cerb. But I didn't remove the speedo pickup and swap it with the blanking plate on my old box. I was concerned about causing a potential leak so I let sleeping dogs lie.

TBH I would be surprised if it weren't readily available from one of the usual suspects. However if there is a serious possibility that it could be of some use, then please let me know.

Thanks for replying Paul. As I recall the speedo drive/blanking plug both have an 'O' ring seal so there should be no risks of an oil leak if you swap them over.

Thanks Darkmatter and Ukkid35

There is indeed an o-ring on the blanking plug aswell. I'd be very interested in the unit Ukkid35 if you decided to part with it. Just remember that you will need to top up the gearbox oil after removing it.

Let me know if you decided to replace it.

And if you should be under the car I'd be very interested in a picture aswell.

Unfortunately for me the box is now off the car as it has suffered a mechanical failure. The input shaft gear now has missing teeth, which is apparently not unknown. Sadly this happened at the Ring, so significant expense was incurred...

Anyway, I can now remove the part you require, if you still need it. Let me know.

Also, just in case anyone has another working T5WC they want to sell - please pm me!

Sorry to hear about you misfortune.
I'd still be interested. Could you remove it and snap a few pictures and take some measurements?

"T5 Gearbox", inserted into the EBay search, comes up with several possibles I think...

Sadly not, just one.

The 1700 box has the wrong input shaft
The 1500 Cosworth box has the wrong tail with the shifter in the wrong position, and is probably not a T5WC
The 1500 Borg Warner box is probably the same as above
The 1250 Ford Sierra box has the wrong input shaft retainer, and also the wrong tail
The 1000 Cosworth box again has the wrong tail

The only box that is a direct fit is the TVR GLen box for £999

Would it be possible to have your box fixed and uprated?

Paul I can't find the receipt to double check but a seem to remember a full rebuild by read an racing was about the same cost as the TVR glen box and you get a warranty.
