Maybe a daft question, but....as I understand it, the clutch is comprised of a number of springs which absorb a certain amount of shock from the engine to the input shaft of the gearbox. As a result there has to be a certain degree of movement in the clutch?
If the springs are past there best would the clutch have an extra amount of slack which would cause noise and some extra backlash?
On a different topic I think? that the low speed surge that I had may have been fixed by replacing the coolant temp sensor. I just need a really cold morning start to find out for sure.

Hi john , for the Monaro I'm assuming , there is a lot of play in the drive and that's normal , my best reply is if it's working as it should do then don't worry about it , driveshafts and a bit of a agricultural diff plus box add to this , but if diff is clunking in normal driving it does need a fluid change and friction modifier added , hope that helps Chris

VXR2010,

Yes Chris, I have done all the rear end,the only thing left to do is replace one drive shaft. The clunk isn't a problem as that's from the Truetrac and normal. Its the amount of slack in the rest of the drive train I want to sort out. I can't wait to replace the clutch I'm sure that will help.

I've had a truetrac installed in mine and I also notice the same clunk. I did wonder what the heck it was. Glad it's not just mine smile

Ditto on the truetrac clunk. I thought the OE diff was meant to clunk too, but mine never did...although perhaps that means the friction modifier wasn't ever right.

The Truetrac is a clunker, and that's nothing at all to worry about. I think it's all to do with the amount of play where the half shafts locate against the diff, It's just how they are made.
The inner workings of the Truetrac are quiet, well they are on my car.
Come to think of it, I wonder if you could make up a half shaft just to take up the play in the side carriers to stop the clunk?
