SL55AMG virtual complete brake failure
Discussion
I suffered this at about 80 mph yesterday and could easily have been killed.
Warning buzzer sounded and messages to take the car to a garage appeared and not to drive it message with a big STOP. The fault disappeared as i crept home the 1000 metres on hazzard lights but came back as i approached my house.
Anyone know if there was a recall on these for brake-related issues; or is 30,500 miles about typical of the model (11 years old though) for some sort of pump failure?
MB don't seem interested to even reply.

The SBC pumps need to be replaced every so often - they're about £1000. Merc were doing them for free up til a couple of years ago (they did mine on my SL500).
Have you had your car since new?
The reason I ask is that given the cost of the pump I suspect that a lot of unscrupulous dealers/owners are simply resetting the pump instead. Obviously this will have ramification in the future (as I have always thought) in that the pumps will fail.

Did the brakes actually fail or did you just get the warning message?Warning buzzer sounded and messages to take the car to a garage appeared and not to drive it message with a big STOP. The fault disappeared as i crept home the 1000 metres on hazzard lights but came back as i approached my house.

I thought the SBC system had a backup brake cylinder? You may need to push your foot through the floor but you shouldn't have total brake failure.
That's correct. You are losing assist. Although IIRC on an SL55, the unassisted brakes without SBC will only be operating the rear callipers. Most good indis know how to sort SBC issues for a fraction of main dealer prices.
New BOSCH SBC units are available from Germany for around £500.
