I am considering a Carrera 4S poss gen 2 and was going to go for an automatic rather than a manual I was wondering if there were any issues to look out for or any thoughts as to which would be the better getting lazy in my old age.

The PDK system (only on the gen 2) is a fairly tough nut, but like everything they can go wrong, and as such I would suggest getting a porsche warranty, purely to cover the PDK, as its a sealed unit, it would cost some serious money if a fault was occur with it. Apart from that go for it, I have a PDK and think its glorious.

I assume we are talking 997.2 then?

I had a PDK and thought it was far too clinical. There is no blip on downchanges; after a while i just felt like it was no different from some Mercedes auto from '80s. This was not helped when my dad got his new Boxster S where the PDK is much, much better!

Given the 997 is a future classic in the making, i think a manual will be worth more in the future, if that is important to you.

The PDK may be considered good now, but in a few years could well feel quite old.

There are less manual cars (as the majority of new owners picked PDK) so manual cars are likely to be more valuable going forward especially as they are bought by enthusiasts for the weekend, rather than as daily drivers.

I would say, 997 - manual, 991 - PDK (but only because the 7-spd manual is so disappointing).

Porsche are bringing out the 911R in manual only so there must be people who want it.

From what you have said, I think a PDK would suit you best.

yes 997.2
all above points considered looks like manual is the more favorable option as it will possibly hold its value better long term ?
damn !! I really fancied a pdk.

A lot will boil down to personal taste/driving style etc.

For no particular reason all four Porsche's I have owned have been tip's or PDK. I had placed a deposit on a new CGTS & on my PEC driving day I had both manual & PDK lined up to try. Really enjoyed the manual - & think this added to a much more enjoyable driving experience & overrun sounded great. But my pro-driver on the day was very pro PDK - saying things like "Lewis Hanilton doesn't drive a manual on track. You will never be able to beat the PDK for changing gear; it's that quick". OK, he is right; but maybe its not all about being that 1/2 second quicker in changing gear. The PDK is a million miles better than the previous tip autos. As my 997.2 is a daily drive, most being town driving I prefer the PDK. And with PASM it's still fun to drive on the twisties.

At the end of the day with PDK / manual, it boils down to different strokes for different blokes. If you want to buy a car as an investment then I think the 997 should not be top of the list (perhaps somewhere in the middle). Instead buy the car you will enjoy the most now, if somehow manage to achieve a little appreciation in value then fantastic. All this future classic stuff is pure speculation, nobody can predict the future. For all we know world war 3 could break out next week. Just enjoy owning a great machine.

PDK is a semi automatic!

The 'manuel' box on the 997.2 is far superior to the 991 and whereas upgrades can improve the 997.2 PDK this box is not as good as that in the 991. You would pay c £2k more for a C4S gen 2 PDK over the 'manuel' and in the short to medium terms both cars should hold their values similarly.

Depending on your definition of laziness and amount of congested traffic driving, you may be better off with a PDK.

"pro-driver" hehe

PDK makes his life a lot easier no doubt, if he genuinely prefers it to manual then he's in the wrong job.

Enjoy it. I have driven one and in spite of the fact I own a manuel [sic] the PDK was a hoot and has it advantages.
