From another forum:
'what is the P on the wheel of the D70 for?'
Simpo: 'Do you still have the packaging it came in?'
Bonehead: 'Yes, why'?
Simpo: 'This is a pretty serious problem. You need to take it back to the shop.
Bonehead: 'Really?! What should I tell them?'
Simpo: 'Tell them you're too
ing stupid to own an SLR!'
(am I being too harsh?)

To be honest... yes.
It's not obvious what the letters mean to someone new to the world of SLRs. When i first started, i thought M stood for Macro... not Manual.
Easy mistakes to make if you're not used to them
To be honest, i haven't used the P setting... always on Manual (now i know what it means!
). What does P mean? And yes i know you all think i'm an idiot now, but I enjoy taking photos and have taken some photos with the camera that I and my friends/family love so i must be doing something right

Don't get me wrong, we all start from zero knowledge at some time. But I'm just amazed that he never thought to look it up in the instructions.
By contrast other things are hard to understand even if you have read the book, and that's where forums take over. But to get stuck on 'P' doesn't bode well, I think. I guess this is something that'll always be associated with an 'entry level' model... I don't think too many D2H or 1DS users will be stuck on 'P'!

Mentally congratulating myself here for choosing Luca and EmmaP for advice on buying my first SLR...
Oh and biiiiiiig
to Nina at Jessops in Southend on Sea for not assuming that you're stupid just because you're not an expert in her specialist subject.
Does that answer your question Simpo?

Simpo - fair comment. I just went and looked it up. Posting on a forum without checking the manual or google is lazy imo.
Good example - Nina advised very strongly to buy a case that was big enough to grow in to, and also big enough to keep your manual in, until you know what you're doing.
Poor bloke might just have been trying to strike up a bit of discussion. Blooming difficult when you don't know what you're on about to start conversation with people with a lot more experience.

... so if anyone wants to know what the round glass thing on the front does, post away
Eh? I've only got round plastic on the front of mine, and all my shots are totally under-exposed.
I think instruction reading has hit an all time low. Did you know that CD player manufacturers stopped putting shipping bolts on, not because it was a bad idea, but because nobody read the manual. The slightest bump and it'd skip like mad. An ex-girlfriends Dad was totally impressed when I cured the skipping issue on his third replacement player

Perhaps you can help me then..
Roop bought me a Canon Digial Ixus I (the 4 megapixal one in bronze) Whats the max size card I can put in..?
I mailed Canon and they came back with a 2GB CF card, as far as I can tell its not the right slot for a CF only SD card.
Need it asap for when I go to Vienna.
Cheers

Yup, it's SD that you need. I'd go for 1GB cards max. That way if one goes bad you don't loose all the pictures.

Thanks for the heads up! The staff in Basildons Jessops don't want to listen to any of my questions and are only interested in closing a deal.
