Whos struggling to get out in this colder weather..

I went out the other night, everything was fine at around 12.5 deg, but got to the edge of Salisbury plains and the temp dropped by at least 3-4 deg, was really chilly !! Am due another ride tonight but I'm thinking I need a hat / cap, a base layer and some proper foot covers..


Could you advise which one's you reckon are best?

Belgian style winter hat
Merino wool long sleeve base layer
Winter buff (scarf type collar)
Neoprene overshoes from the likes of Northwave / Shimano etc
Windproof gillet if your jacket doesn't have a windproof front

i have no option. i've done 4807 miles so far this year. i HAVE to reach 6000 by 31st December. that is in fact quite a challenge if you do the maths.

Helly Hansen Merino base layer, £20 or something like that, if it's dry it's all I wear for the commute, even when it's actually freezing. When it's wet you can't beat a Castelli Gabba, but they're a bit more than £20...

Yeah, I love the castelli stuff, but only their gloves fit - ive got a 47" chest and I think their xxl is only up to 44...Thanks though.

Did 27 miles night before last starting about 6pm and 11 degrees but was down to 5 by time I got back ! Endura base layer did its job......was in shorts which was fine whilst out but knees were painful next day which I can only put down to being worked in cold temps so leg warmers from now on if it's going to be that cold or worse ! Doesn't put me off going out though despite first 15 mins being tough until body gets up to working temp

I don't find 8 degrees too bad, but 3-6 really knocks the stuffing out of me. Still in shorts, although I wear two (cheap) baselayers and a long sleeve jersey. Sometimes mitts sometimes gloves.

I wear a skull cap type thing if it's 3-6 but my head gets way too hot if it is any warmer than that.

Feet are a serious problem for me though. Defeet Woolie Boolies, sometimes a thin pair of socks over them, ziplock bags over the socks, Castelli toe covers over the fronts of the shoes. And I still have cold feet!

Yeah, its that initial drive of getting out there isn't it, once youre out its fine.. But so much easier to slouch onto the sofa..

Im going to trial my new Kona Jake the snake up the woods tonight !!

You are quite correct.

But I'm having to wear my Northwave Arctic boots at the moment as I've no other SPD-friendly shoes, and today, due to the laundry situation, I was forced to wear my Pistonheads/Bioracer winter jacket. It was either that, or a short sleeved summer jersey.

Uncomfortably warm in all that, and I got a bit of a dab on too. Oh. And my full-finger gloves escaped the washing machine, and by 'eck, they don't 'alf pen and ink!

Pics taken from a few years ago above Mont Dore - temp was down to about -8 / -9. Proper cold. Dress for the weather, no probs.
