390SE update........
Discussion
It's alive! Main rad fitted yesterday, oil cooler and hoses today. Fired up at 4.00pm this afternoon and I'm told is sounds superb and "crisp". No misfire, revs clean but didn't take it over 3000rpm. Oil pressure just over 20psi at tick over.
Tomorrow it's a final check on emissions and timing, bolt the bonnet back on and ready for collection.
Very excited!

Mmmmm. Seemed all sorted - starts and runs clean, no misfire, pulls like a train, sounds fantastic and then once the engine was up to temperature a slight misfire crept in and stayed there. Let engine cool down and then fired it up again and all was good - until the engine bay was hot. Sound familiar?
Given the identical issue with the 350i I'm going to look at the HT side of things and double check leads/dissy and coil. I know they were all new on the 390Se but they were also new on the 350i so I will assume anything new is a suspect. I do have plenty of spares however so I won't have to buy any more new bits, just yet. Anyway the old camshaft was scrap metal so at least I am certain that bit was faulty.
Ciderclock I think - a bit disappointing, but on the bright side I have a new job. Current company making the design team redundant so our competitor has made a very nice offer for me to join them, and their office is 5 minutes nearer home. I won't even have to touch an A road on the short drive to work down the country lanes, although I might have to go the long way to get the Wedge warmed up?

Keith as you know i had a sneaky suspicion that the cam was not the sole cause of the problem, However don't knock yourself out over it as the cam obviously needed changing and is one of the RPITA jobs to do...Good oil and regular changes the cam should see you for another 80,000 miles...So thats a big step forward.
Now like you say the 350i had a similar issue surrounding the incompatibility of new parts against old parts so the problem may lie there..It seems that as long as you change the distributor...Amp...Coil...Cap and rotor arm at the same time then it seems to be okay..What the longevity of these parts are in the engine bay of a TVR is anyones guess!!...
Im hoping that the parts you bought from TVR parts are geared up for what we need and if so then maybe the 390SE needs the same treatment....
I think first though you need to be methodical..I know you will be anyway but try all of this before buying any more new parts......Check and clean/Gap spark plugs/Connectors...Earths...Relays...Fuses...Make sure the ECU plug is firmly home and that the resistor pack plug is in snugly..Carefully inspect the TPS wires in place but do not pull them about too much..And have a look at the CTS plug wires inside the rubber boot...Cant remember if Scott checked all of it....I still say well done mate, This is a project for you and to be fair its not a total money pit just a PITA...When you finally crack it you will have a rare and sort after beast..Many "Smiles per mile" ahead mate......

What doesn't help is the cheap crap people are knocking out these days...
... another example is side and tail light bulbs, I used to get mine from the scrapyard in the days when you could crawl around and fill yer pockets, those burnt in ones lasted for years, unlike the brand new ones with thin filaments. Such is progress...

Its home, and running nicely. After the new camshaft had been installed, once the engine warmed up, there was a slight misfire. AFM has now been adjusted and everything is sweet. Emissions are pretty good and the engine pulls and revs clean. It is quite "cammy" at idle compared with the 350i and certainly doesn't pull as well from low revs but once it's above 2000rpm it goes like stink. I'm going to take it easy for the first 500 miles before giving it any serious beans but very happy. Took it for a spin this afternoon and steering, suspension and brakes are all impressive.
So new bits fitted over the last 3 months include, full camshaft kit, starter motor, refurbished main radiator , oil cooler, oil cooler hoses, K&N filter, clutch slave cylinder, ignition amp.

Fantastic news mate....Its mad how they both have the "HG" at the end of the reg...Do you know what part of the country they are from originally as each lettering denotes what part of England they were sold in...Ziga
Hi Mark I hadn't even noticed the registration similarities. Here's a quick video clip so you can have a listen.
