Tips on Eating and drinking in Glasgow

Any locals got any tips on where to get a nice meal and some decent drinks in center of Glasgow?, Myself and the wife are coming up to see U2 on the 6th and staying for the weekend but don't want to waste time wondering round in the wrong areas, We are staying in the Glasgow city hotel (formerly Thistle)which from what i can gather is pretty central so tips within walking distance would be great.

The Thistle is next to Sauchiehall St so first you want to get away from there. Bath St (next one down) is better and has loads of bars. Having said that if you're going to the Hydro/SECC you'd be as well in Finnieston as it's right next door. The Gannet just won a best restaurant award and there are tons of others at that part of Argyle St. It's enjoying quite the renaissance just now with Hydro money sloshing around. Lebowski's, The Finnieston, Crabbshakk, Panevino, Lamora, there's loads.

It's walking distance for a guy, maybe not for the wife depending on her choice of shoes. Don't get confused and go to the other bit of Argyle St (they don't connect up) or the choice will be Maccy Ds and a fight or KFC and a fight.

I'm looking for recommendations as well, I'm moving there in a few weeks.

I've tried a few of the places that have migrated east. I like TriBeCa, Burger Meats Bun and Lebowski's. Not so big on Pinto's.

Wouldn't mind some pub recs. Also decent day to day restaurants and take aways.

Also, if it is dry it's a nice walk between the centre of Glasgow-Hydro. You can get around Glasgow on foot very easily.

If it's raining, taxi's aren't expensive.

What kind of food do you want to eat? The Gannet has already been mentioned, and I'd say if you were going to the O2 then you'd be much better off heading right down Argyle St or Sauchiehall St to the Kelvingrove end. The "G3" area of Glasgow has been improving massively over the last 10 years.

Crabshakk, Butchershop, Brewdog, the Finnieston for food.. Stravaigin in Hillhead would be my choice because I haven't been there in years, but loved it. It's a bit further out the way though. Plenty of options for food and drink on Byres Road as well.

My favourite restaurant ever is the Cail Bruich.

Outstanding taster menu for £50 and cheaper a la carte options too.

So glad we found it.

Really no shortage of places near the centre and west end.

Lamora is good for Italian (if they've reopened after refurbishment). Finnieston for fish. Both short walk from SECC.

Tried Bread Meats Bread while in Glasgow yesterday and it was pretty decent. My cheeseburger was great, my missus got the fried chicken sandwich and while I wasn't big on the breading she thought it was delicious. We also got a giant portion of poutine, we couldn't finish it between the two of us. It was decently priced, all that food plus a soft drink and a couple of glasses of their house lager came to £26.

I'd go there again over the Five Guys across the road.
