I usually pop to the local motor-factor to pick up a pot, but I was just wondering if anyone buys online, and if there is any (price) benefit.

I'm after some Millers so they probably won't have it at my local Halfrauds anyway, but I'm just interested in what people usually do.

Opie's the Go-to place for choice - not always the cheapest though but also not far off.

Costco if all you want is Castrol Magnatec or 4 litres of Mobil 1 for 30 quid. smile

I buy my Shell Helix Racing 10w60 in 20 litre drums from a seller on Ebay called OilDrop.
It arrives the next day and is around £109 for 20 litres delivered. He isn't advertising right this minute, but check in a few days and his advert will be back. It's normally £10-12 per litre.

The drums also make sense if, like me, you have changed your sump for an extended baffled one that takes 9.5 litres.

Lees after millers nanotech... If you're still running that, don't mix it.

It's Mobile 1, same grade, at the moment. I'll be changing to Millers again though.

So no topping up the oil in there already with my remaining Millers?

Do you need to use zinc additives with this?

I haven't and after 20,000 miles am not aware of any issues. Instead I have an oil that really protects my engine on both road and track. I did chat it through with the Technical Manager at Castrol, who said that extra zinc would help protect your engine........if you had almost none left in the engine and it was about to seize.

I thought it was "required" by the cams and tappets in our old-skool lumps...?

It has about 1000 parts per whatever, so not high zinc, but got a fair bit. Perhaps more important that the oil is of top quality and 10w60, protecting the engine at all temperatures, given the thrashing I give it around race tracks in the summer and the country drives all winter, including Christmas Day.

I always use High zinc oils and actually in some oils add a zinc additive with every oil change..
This is a massive issue in old engines since modern oils don't have the zinc in them needed for high contact high pressure areas which don't exist in modern engine designs running roller cams etc..

This is the result of using a modern grade oil in an old engine start up..

This is a very important area in old engines.. ignore at your peril.

I buy my shell Helix from Eurocarparts. I just check their site every now and then for deals , just bought 5l for £19.79 with free shipping. Price for the same at Opie was £30 with free shipping but you had to buy 2 to get that price and I only needed 1. Amazon were £40 and halfords dont stock it.

I buy from these people..I used their classic oil which contains a good amount of ZDDP..A lot of other Wedge owners use the Valvoline VR1, Using the right oil will save your cam along with regular oil & Filter changes....smile..Ziga

Valvoline still a good oil with more ZDDP than most..
When using Valvoline beware though.. There are now 2 types.. The best is still the Mineral based VR1 20-50.. Even with this I add a bottle of Comp cams Zinc additive at every change..

The only downside of the Mineral oil is the shear strength when used aggressively…Not a factor on most road cars but in the race car when you are operating in the 120 - 130 degree bracket you know that the oil is shearing down potentially..This is when it is even more critical to have ZDDP..

I still like Valvoline but next year for the racer I am swapping to Royal Purple…V expensive but very good feedback from race teams…Probably overkill for a road car though..

Old 50's désigned engines like old spec oil.

Modern oils lack the older ingredients to work well in old engines…Entirely down to the environmentalists..

I agree with Dodsy, have a look for online for promo codes, always works out cheaper for me that way with Eurocarparts
