SLK 200K worth a punt?
Discussion
I noticed in the back of one of our local pubs a sad looking SLK last night, with a for sale sign on it.
It is looking pretty sad with flat tyres, no tax, and a lot of condensation on the windows.
However looking at the new MOT checker it does have an MOT, for another 2 weeks.
The car is Sorned and I very much doubt the owner will get another MOT for it.
I am templed to make an offer for it. But does anyone have any idea where to punt it at?
On the plus side it has only done 40,000 miles, and was registered in 2000
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Could be a nice little mini restoration. There is a wheeler dealer episode on this exact model if you you-tube it. If you watch the show you'll know the episode. You might spend the cars value you pay for it getting it up to scratch but if you are a grand in and you've got a folding hardtop Merc then i'd say bargain.
If you do go for it and do some bit but a thread in readers cars and put a link over here in the MB section. i'd be interested if following it as i'm sure others would be too.
I've got a R171 SLK55 AMG and although very different from R170 SLK200 they are a great little car and have a good following. you certainly wont loose money on it if you get it for £500 and get everything working !
Merc lacquer and paint is very good and responds well to a mop and polish. Plastics and interior are good too.
on the earlier SLK watch out for rust, wheel arches are prone. search google.
a great resource for you: http://www.slkworld.com/

Yeh - rust in the arches is the big one. But how cheap is it - and what are your long term intentions ?
Damp inside - may just be with it standing and temperature when you saw it. But equally it could be some seals that have gone. Top rear corner of door windows is a bad wear area.
My 99 (30k miles) car which usually lives under cover has just had the seal replaced under the rear window. That was the cheap bit - £150 for the seal. Under that seal lives the central locking pump body which is over £500 - and seems to be a common issue at this age due to the seal allowing ingress. I did manage to find one on a scrap donor - but most have either failed themselves or already been removed at £250 a throw.
Love my 230K - weekend toy - only taken out usually in the dry with the roof down - and that includes minus 5c in winter - heated seats and a good coat / hat ! No worry about getting sunburn. Can't beat driving at night with the stars above.
