So finally need to change my front brake pads - phoned 3 local dealers and quoted £475 to £495, apparently using BMW 'service value line' web-site.

I know about M tax but still seems expensive just for pads (my rears were about £225 when I changed them). So should I just suck it up and book it in, or can I get genuine parts (any recommendations on where I could get them) and have an indy fit them (I'm based Surrey/Hampshire border).

Thoughts?

That's ridiculous!

These people in Camberley have had good reviews:

http://twgautomotive.co.uk/

A colleague has had work done by them and said they were good, as well.

Do you know what the OEM pads part numbers are?
Front pads are normally simple to change.

I'm happy to help you change them, if you want to try yourself - I'm in Fleet.

Have you gone through the sensor, or just been told they should be done soon?

£500 to change a set of pads? What would that have cost for an e60 at a dealer when they were new?

Why not go to an Indy for consumables?

No need to go main dealer for pads/tyres etc. Last set of OEM rears i had fitted cost me £105 all in.

Only replaced the fronts a few weeks ago & opted for Pagid RS29's all round so that was a great figure as the pads themselves cost close to £700, but was only charged £400 to have those fitted as well as H&R Springs all round.

Thanks for all the replies - to respond to questions:

I have gone onto real OEM and I think the part number is 34112284465.

Thanks for the heads up on the guys in Camberley - that is where I live, so I will give them a call.

I have looked on-line at pads but didn't originally come up with anything OEM so I have tried with the part number. US sites bring up figures north of $550 and still waiting for a UK site to come back with a quote. In that context, the quoted price of £475 seems less unreasonable.

I'm not sure if the sensor has worn down - my service indicator had been saying 1,400 miles for a long while and when I had a service done a few months ago, asked the dealership to check the front brakes. They said there was still 6-7mm of wear left. I haven't driven much since and then on the way back from Frankfurt, suddenly said that I needed new brake pads. Car has done 51,000 miles and these are first set of front pads so I guess I can't complain too much, albeit i'd prefer not to spend £500.

If anyone can suggest where I could get OEM pads, that would be great.

Bloody hell, 51000 miles on the original front pads.

Worth noting their is a know issue with CBS on the pads. I had 2600 miles left on a set of my fronts according to the iDrive, but following a free health check was told the same as you that i had 7-8mm wear left which should translate to about 8-10k miles so when i questioned the dealer they said it will be the sensors. I then went on track & killed the pads so they all needed replacing anyway.

Thats a ridiculous price! I found the brakes on the M5 to be its weakpoint, its not like there is something exotic about the materials or performance of the brakes that even goes part of the way to justifying such a premium.

Can't really comment on the compound of them.
But they look cool as hell so that's worth a premium on its own biggrin

Can your u not just change them yrself? It's very easy to do so if yr worried able it the all up cost a few hours could save you allot, plus you get to give the shiney calipers a good clean and polish. Having said that it does appear allot of owners tend not to touch their cars for some reason... I can never bond with mine till I've done a few DIY jobs myself TBH.

I used to lots of spannering when I was young so I probably could do it, but given the performance and importance of the brakes to my family's and my well being, I would at least get an indie to do the work.

I hope to get a couple of quotes tomorrow and will then make a decision what to do.

I know they are out there but good luck as 99% of the spanner monkeys I know are just that, bloody monkeys.

As an aside I wonder how if BMW even bother pre oiling the oil filter when they change the oil as part of a service, I doubt it.

How's you tyre life been & how many sets of rear pads have you gone through? Still mazed you've got 51k miles out of a set of fronts.

I've had one set of rear pads at about 22,000 miles, but no sign of them needing to be replaced yet.

I'm on my third set of tyres - MPSS every time and I have been amazed how they last.

I used to drive my M3 and 997 very hard when conditions allowed and don't think I drive the M5 any slower, albeit that means I feel comfortably within it's ability. But consumables on the M5 are lasting longer than prior cars. Given the extra weight of the M5 - it doesn't make sense.

How would they rate against the OEM pads?

I've got RS29's on mine currently, but unless things have changed in the last few months, their were only 2 suppliers of these in F10 M5 size & both are in the US so i got caught out with bullst duty/tax on import & they cost the best part of £600 which tbh is about right for RS29's but i thought i was getting a great deal before the duty robbers paid a visit.

If you're not after extra-performance pads then just go for regular OE replacements like Pagid.

Only £109 at ECP for M5 fronts set. (use EXTRA10 discount code)

They will be JUST as good as OEM. 10% off deal expires 31st Oct!

They were Mintex M1144 spec pads so pretty high in terms of performance and comparable with Pagid and Textar in terms of bedding in, bite and performance which in my opinion are as good as OEM. Infact, I believe TEXTAR supply actually BMW on some of their high end models.

You can also get standard Mintex ones for around c£80 and they'll last a fair few miles but the the friction material will be the same as the regular F10 model so if you hammer them they'll start to squeak quickly.

Part number for them is MDB3253. These are the cheapest you can get and you can source them from your local Andrew Page dealer, but not Eurocarparts as ECP do not have a Mintex/TMD account.

That's cheap. Are you sure they're the OEM pad for the F10 M5?
