Hi, XP home came with PC I bought recently from a PC boffin,
but having attempted to install DVD RW, and failed I tried to return to original condition,
only to constantly recieve 'runtime error' message, and often 'error occured-must now close' with random web-site viewings,

Should i re-format PC together with supplied XP windows disc, how succesful is this likely to be

Take the side of the pc and make sure that you haven't dislodged any wiring, in particular the ribbon cabling to the hard drive and, presumably, the original CD.

If you have moved the cabling to the cd player, make sure that the red trace thread on the ribbon is nearest the power cable plug.

Also make sure that you havn't bent a pin whilst plugging in the cable.

Cant see that you need to reformat....

Will it boot up in safe mode - reboot and press F8 and choose safe mode.

See if the pc 'sees' the cd player ok.

Also check that the master/slave/cable select jumpers on both the original and new drives are set appropriately.
